Bella Donna Lyrics

You can ride high atop your pony
I know you won't fall...
'cause the whole thing's phoney.
You can fly swingin from your trapeze
Scaring all the people...
but you never scare me

Bella donna...
And we fight...for the northern star

No speed limit...this is the fast lane
It's just the way that it is here
And you say...I never thought it could

Bella donna...we fight...
for the northern star

And the lady's feeling
Like the moon that she loved
Don't you know that the stars are
A part of us
And the lady's feeling
Just like the moon that she loved

And you say...I never thought it could
Bella donna
Come in out of the darkness...

You are in love with...
And I'm ready to sail...
It's just a feeling...
Sort of captures your soul

Bella donna...

And the woman may be awestruck
And the woman may truly care
but the woman is so tired...
So the woman dissappears...

Come in out of the darkness...

Bella donna...my soul...

Don't change...baby please don't change
And you say...
and your face becomes thin
You never thought it could
Come in out of the darkness
Bella donna...

You are in love with
And I'm ready to sail
It's just a feeling

How is that no one has commented on such an amazing song? Wow. That's insane!

'Bella Donna' is a term of endearment I use and the title is about making a lot of decisions in my life, making a change based on the turmoil in my soul. You get to a certain age where you want to slow down, be quieter. The title song was basically a warning to myself and a question to others. I'm thirty-three years old, and my life has been very up and down in the last six years. ~Stevie Nicks, Rolling Stone, 1981

The white outfit I'm wearing is the exact opposite of my black outfit on Rumours. Over that it says, 'Come in from the darkness...' [which is] the dark side of anyone, the side that isn't optimistic, that isn't strong. I've got to become stronger because I am very sensitive, and everything really touches me. ~Stevie Nicks, Rolling Stone, 1981

I need to do this to fulfill myself as a writer. I mean, it says, 'come in out of the darkness.' That's saying, save yourself and come back. And it's a serious thing. I had to do that to do the LP. I had to stop being crazy, or it wasn't going to be done. Bella Donna was serious ~ I was not talking about a beautiful woman. I was talking about a beautiful woman becoming old and not beautiful. And skinny and too tired, the woman disappears. ~Stevie Nicks, High Times, 1982

This is sort of...the end of a dream. We practiced for like four years to do that. Thank you girls. ~An emotional Stevie after singing the song Bella Donna in concert, 1981

The song Bella Donna is about getting a little bit of my normal life back. ~Stevie Nicks, Everything You Wanted to Know About Stevie Nicks, 1985

@marquicerise Yes, that's right. That's what she has been always talking about this song. But in addition to that she has recently said that "Bella Donna" includes also a little thread about some woman from Chile (the mother of her then-boyfriend) who lost his beloved man because of dictatorship :/ Stevie's songs can be really about everything :D

I love how haunting and powerful this song is. I can't believe more people haven't commented on this yet.

My favorite part of this is the melodic idea that presents itself in, "No speed limit, this is the fast lane" and "And the woman may be so awestruck..." especially "It's just the way that it is here"/"But the woman is so tired". That part just shakes me up every time, and Stevie delivers this song so well.

I definitely see how this song is kind of a letter to yourself. "Bella donna...my soul..." This song conveys sort of an understanding and compassion with the lowest parts of yourself and presents a sort of crossroads mood; you've taken stock of your situation and now you're ready to take a step towards a direction.

Wonderful comment

Bella donna used to be used as drops in the eyes to make your pupils dilate to be more attractive to the opposite sex - she is essentially saying her soul has expanded and she can either fall in on move on.

This is probably my favorite song from her solo career and mostly because different lines appeal to the eye of the beholder.

Going out on a limb here but its similar to yellow ledbetter by Pearl Jam (he's not sure if he's the boxer or the bag).

Great lyrics. Clear and concise ... she will always be part of my life.
