Goodnight Song Lyrics

Here on the stage
The time has come
With the strains of "Be my angels!", of rock in two four
Time may keep alive that old swang song
That we've been playing forever
Till the time maybe right to say goodbye
My voice is aching, I'm tongue tired
And the sounds we are making are so uninspired

Goodnight song, played so wrong
Blame the crowd, they scream so loud, so long

Get some honesty
Take the best of me and then the rest let go
In every situation with it's tireless rage
Step outside your cage and let the real fool show
I should have stayed round to break the ice
I thought about it once or twice
But nothing ever changes unless there's some pain

Blame the crowd, they scream so loud, so long

Blame the crowd, they scream so loud, so long

'nothing ever changes unless there's some pain'

AMEN ROLAND! What a simple but so so so truthful statement!

I always thought this song was about Curt Smith, his duo partner who Roland Orzabal once ousted from the band. Roland wrote almost everything for the band, and the Smith was not the best bassist. "Goodnight song, played so wrong / Blame the crowd, they scream so loud, so long / Get some honesty" This was Orzabal's first album after Smith was let go.

My Interpretation

@MattBianco "Take the best of me and then the rest let go" Step outside your cage and let the real fool show"

I completely agree with you. I find this song more emotional than Fish Out of Water.

I agree with the earlier comment on how understatedly brilliant this line is: "nothing ever changes, unless there's some pain."

Another thing I've often wondered about is how the song itself has Roland singing "and the sounds we are making are so...", yet some versions of the lyrics (including, if I recall, the album insert lyrics), have "and the sounds we are making are so uninspired." I love that--so cool how the word 'uninspired' is not in the performance, but at some point at least, I think Roland want to suggest that we fill in the blank!
