Child abuse. How someone was abused as a child and now as an adult tries to hide it but it keeps getting harder and he/she's 'breaking inside,' and he/she is just plain confused about all of it.

This Song has to be one of my Favorite TFF songs. I think it is about the quiet, lonely person who carries a sad burden in their heart. The person in the office you never talk too; The person at church you see every week but never talk too; the neighbor you see walking to the mail-box but have never acknowledge. She seems fine and has everything she needs but she is alone and in need of love and friendship. She needs someone to talk too but she is too shy or too modest or simply doesn't feel worthy of any ones time. Love the guitar in this one.

I like Lostmycapo's interpretation. There's a lot of people out there who are empty, in emotional pain from things that happened in the past, but can't express it. "What's left of me or anyone when we've denied the hurting?" Even if it's difficult or not acceptable to express the pain you feel, what IS left of yourself ? The fake part that keeps a straight face, that never says a thing unkind? We can't really be ourselves until we acknowledge everything about ourselves.

As a wise person once told me, "you're only as sick as the secrets you keep". It applies to this song quite well. And, like others say on this site, this song describes my own life well. I'm one of those people that no one speaks to, and, in the rare case they might, never expresses anger or says if something is wrong. Everything is a-okay. Sometimes I even convince myself. "Emo", I realize, but the truth. It's a common way to cope with unresolved issues.

Not hard to to "get" what the lyrics mean, but we all have different associations with it. Personally, it means a lot and describes my constant state of mind I've had since I can remember.

"All the deeds of yesterday, have really helped to pave my way." is sarcastic. To me, it refers to the past mistakes I made and still regularly do. I drink myself to sleep everyday and REALLY "helps my pave my way" the next day. /sarcasm

The state of feeling so young and old could mean a sensation of impeding death upon somone. The clock is ticking and yet, I have accomplished so little and I have not felt happy for most of my life. The ongoing feeling of emptiness makes one feel much older. And its funny, because I have a beautiful standard of life and have the chance to be well nourished, have access to higher education and hell, even party quite regularky. But despite this, I am exactly full but feeling empty.

I think we can all agree that the last verse is the apogee of the song. As previously mentioned by others, it`s how we all hide our pain and pretend that everything is ok. Somone is talking to you, and ask how you are. Most of the time, even to a close one, you are most definitly going ot say that you are doing fine even though you are suffering inside. Basicly, its how we hide our daily pain because its taboo and we are only allowed to talk about our suffering to psychologists or very very close people (and even then....)

In short, this song is about how we all suffer silently and try our best to deny the hurting, ultimately failing.. Where do I go, where do I run? Whats left of me or anyone when we've denied the hurting? Drugs and alcohol my friend, and that means, nowhere.

God these are such melodramatic lyrics. I much prefer Daniel Johnston's take with "Casper the Friendly Ghost":

A song that is sung from the perspective of the neglected, indignant child. Although he may have what is considered "essential", the hurt still lives inside and is repressed consciously. His fate leaves him to only suffer in silence, not knowing how to deal with all the pain and suffering.
