Suffer The Children Lyrics
It's a sad affair
When there's no one there
He calls out in the night
And it's so unfair
At least it seems that way
When you gave him his life
And all this time he's been getting you down
You ought to pick him up when there's no one around
And convince him
Just talk to him
Cos he knows in his heart you won't be home soon
He's an only child in an only room
And he's dependant on you
And it seems so strange
That at the end of the day
Making love can be so good
But the Pain of birth
What is it worth
When it don't turn out the way it should
When there's no one there
He calls out in the night
And it's so unfair
At least it seems that way
When you gave him his life
You ought to pick him up when there's no one around
And convince him
Just talk to him
Cos he knows in his heart you won't be home soon
He's an only child in an only room
And he's dependant on you
That at the end of the day
Making love can be so good
But the Pain of birth
What is it worth
When it don't turn out the way it should

First of all, lyrics from the 80s were the best, real artists at these times, it's true, it's a song about the hard breeding of a child, probably a single mother and all the matter, but I think, apart from all the inconvenients, the final message is it's worth doing it, life is suffering after all, and suffering might be rewarded somehow.
Pure and simple, the song is about child abuse.
The message of this song is that children experience nightmares because they aren't allowed to be what they want during the day.
It's pretty straightforeward, it's about a child living in a single-parent home who's not getting the attention he deserves. An unwanted, unplanned child living a lonely life .
Probably about a young single mother who works very hard (probably two jobs) to care for her child and subsquently becomes frustrated with herself; the song perhaps from a close friend's perspective.
Pain of childhjood neglect and how that has such a significant impact on life when you get older (TA psychotherapy and primal scream therapy)
I have to agree, I hear a story of neglect.
I've always wondered if this was about a disabled/special needs child.
"When it don't turn out the way it should", "and it's so unfair...when you gave him his life".
The parents are not neglectful, just confused and uncertain what to do. We didn't do anything wrong, so how did it end up like this? The song is encouraging them that it's okay to fee like this, but they still need to love their child unconditionally no matter what.
To me, it's about a little boy born to a single mother who didn't want a child. She regularly leaves him on his own in a one-room bedsit flat while she's out. She thinks it's unfair that she got pregnant and can't pick him up and tell him that he's wanted because he isn't.
Lyrically, it's terribly sad and captures the loneliness of a child on his own, both when his mother's away and heartbreakingly when she's there. Brings memories of others alive for me, with more adult wisdom on it. Awful to think it happens every day to children right now.
As someone who has suffered in later life from childhood neglect I can tell you this song is simple and straight to the point. It describes childhood neglect exactly. It doesn't matter why the neglect happened but in this case it was seemingly an unplanned pregnancy and a single mother with little time to provide love. In my case I just got in thecwsy of a career.
