Memories Fade Lyrics

There's only need
I love your need
So much I'm losing me
I cannot see the reason for the Pain
With hungry joy
I'll be your toy
Just hoping you will play
Without hope my body starts to fail

Memories fade but the scars still linger
Goodbye my friend
Will I ever love again
Memories fade but the scars still linger

I cannot grow
I cannot move
I cannot fell my age
The vice like grip of tension holds me fast
Engulfed by you
What can I do
When History's my cage
Look foward to a future in the past

The more I talk
The more I say
The less you seem to hear
I'm speechless in a most peculiar way
Your mind is weak
Your need is great
And nothing is too dear
For you to use to take the Pain away
Memories Fade
No don't pretend you can justify the end
Memories fade but the scars still linger

I think this song describes the feelings of trying to recover after a betrayal. The Person wants to make things better but no matter what is done the pain and the anger and the scars get in the way. "There's only need, I love your need, So much I'm losing me, I cannot see the reason for the Pain" He is trying so hard to make things better, to be what she wants that he is losing himself and cannot see why the pain won't stop. He is trapped in the fear of losing his love so the he cannot grow, cannot move and tension, or worry is always there - he is afraid that if her angers her, if he does anything that she doesn't like she will leave. No matter what he says or how he forgives (or apologizes) she doesn't truly hear - rendering him speechless. She use to bring happiness to him but now the scars and the pain is all that he feels.

First time i heard this song i cried. It's so painful to listen to this song after a serious relationship but also helps you get through it. TFF you saved my life before i was even born.

"Memories fade but the scars still linger". This is one of the axioms in the lexicon of life, and if you are a person who does not carry a scar as described, you have not lived.

To think a 19 year old wrote these words, makes me feel like I didn't ponder enough. Bravo Orzabal.

My Opinion

I think this song is about being hurt by love that went wrong somehow... The songwriter is rejected by his "ultimate" lover. After the break up he cannot continue to a next relationship, because he's still hurt and caged by history (this past relationship)... He's in doubt about ever being able to love again in the future. Simply stuck in the past.

Anyway, a very beautiful song, one of my TFF's most favorite songs.

Does anyone know the added lyrics that Roland added to the song over the last 5 years?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuoYgMd_9xs

I listen to it, and it muffled.

:35 Her (??only vows??) starts to fade Her love is a thousand miles away.

--- I think that this is Roland reflecting on a past relationship he had while in his teens. How your old love comes seeking you back after all those years. Yet they are so far away do do anything, and situations are different.

5:10 see (???) silky white night... shining down a pond the ground see the moon milky white son and daughter (??) the ground

--- I get a sense that this is a personal reflection, how they shared a moment and made a promise under the stars. Every time I hear it I get a different set of lyrics from other concerts over the years.

According to Roland, "Memories Fade" is not necessarily (or solely) a love/relationship song:

"The whole notion of repression in psychology is that although things are shoved to the back of one's mind, they still exert a force on your behavior, creating phobias, depression, insecurities... You're using up energy when you're repressing things, which could be used for far better things, like a forehand volley!"
