In the most straightforward sense, it seems that this song is essentially about being tired of doing all the work in a relationship. Could be a friendship, could be a romantic fling. Nothing he does makes the person feel any better about themselves, and he's just realized that he's doing all the work and they aren't willing to even meet him halfway by taking him or anything he says seriously -- so he washes his hands of them. Great song. I relate.
