Hole in the River Lyrics
There's a hole in the river where my auntie lies
From the land of the living to the air and sky
Left her car by the river left her shoes beside
Through the thorns and the bushes I hope she was
Dreaming of glory
Miles above the mountains and plains
Free at last
We were touched by a cold wind, my father and I
The sound of desperate breathing her fear inside us all
She was coming to see him but something changed her mind
Drove her down to the river
There is no return
There's a hole in the river where a memory lies
From the land of the living to the air and sky
She was coming to see him
But something changed her mind,
drove her down to the river
There is no return
From the land of the living to the air and sky
Left her car by the river left her shoes beside
Through the thorns and the bushes I hope she was
Dreaming of glory
Miles above the mountains and plains
Free at last
The sound of desperate breathing her fear inside us all
She was coming to see him but something changed her mind
Drove her down to the river
There is no return
From the land of the living to the air and sky
She was coming to see him
But something changed her mind,
drove her down to the river
There is no return

i think neil said this was about his aunts suicide.
apparently the first time the Crowded House played this song live was at the Farewell to the World concert in Sydney (don't quote me on that) at which Neil's parents were present. It must have been such an emotional night for so many reasons.
Yes, kaatrien is right. This is about Neil's aunt who drowned herself in the river on her way to his dad's house. That is in the lyrics to the song. Neil said it shocked everyone who knew and loved her.
Crowded House not the Crowded House... man, I can't type
