Candy Says

The song is about simplifying your life. "Candy" is tired of life being so confusing and complex. She (Candy would be a girl's name, right?) just wants to escape from it all.

Ummm, she's not "copying" the lyrics, she's remaking the song. "Whore" and "slut" have NEVER been used in a Garbage song (Except Butterfly Collector, which is another cover, and Enough is Never Enough.) And she has written plenty of deep lyrics. Just look at the lyrics to "Afterglow" or "A Stroke of Luck." Please, get your facts straight before you make stupid attacks.

Shirley has NEVER sold herself, and she is not copying lyrics! As Riko pointed out, it's a REMAKE! Shirley is a brilliant lyricist, and if all you can get out of Shut Your Mouth is "whore slut slut whore shut your mouth," perhaps you're the stupid one.

The song was originally written about Candy Darling, a pioneer transexual and awesome woman who died in the 70's. Garbage aren't 'copying' the lyrics as such, they're portraying them a different way as they obviously have some meaning to them.

The Velvet Underground have been an inspiration to a great many bands, and had most of their songs "covered" by other bands. Ironic, almost because the Velvet Underground wasn't that commercially successful on their own. Nevertheless, their stuff was fantastic, and continues to resonate with a wide range of talent, from REM, to the Feelies, to Garbage.

Dead345, you're a complete fucking idiot . When a band remakes a song by another band this is called a COVER. Every band does them ! Whether it be live or studio every band has done at least one. Just saying.

But anyway this is an amazing song, and I love it whether its a cover or not.

Ok..doesnt Shirley Manson have got brains of her own instead of copying Velvet Underground and The Jam's lyrics? I mean...she is not stupid..what the hell is she copying their lyrics for? i dunno..it just pathetically dissapointing..right now..I mean...Butterfly Collector is extremely smart song...i thought she wrote it../So..its like all she can write of HER OWN, is "whore..slut slut whore shut your mouth" its....suspicious..maybe even that..she copyies...SHe is a whore...selling herself to the last..in this show business...this Garbage band is the last chance she has...to show herself..and if she's just gonna continue copying some bands' lyrics..its just a disgrace!
