Blonde In The Bleachers Lyrics
The blonde in the bleachers
She flips her hair for you
Above the loudspeakers
You start to fall
She follows you home
But you miss living alone
You can still hear sweet mysteries
Calling you
The bands and the roadies
Lovin' 'em and leavin' 'em
It's pleasure to try 'em
It's trouble to keep 'em
'Cause it seems like you've gotta give up
Such a piece of your soul
When you give up the chase
Feeling it hot and cold
You're in Rock'n'Roll
It's the nature of the race
It's the unknown child
So sweet and wild
It's youth
It's too good to waste
She tapes her regrets
To the microphone stand
She says "You can't hold the hand
Of a Rock'n'Roll man
Very long
Or count on your plans
With a Rock'n'Roll man
Very long
Compete with the fans
For your Rock'n'Roll man
For very long
The girls and the bands
And the Rock'n'Roll man"
She flips her hair for you
Above the loudspeakers
You start to fall
She follows you home
But you miss living alone
You can still hear sweet mysteries
Calling you
The bands and the roadies
Lovin' 'em and leavin' 'em
It's pleasure to try 'em
It's trouble to keep 'em
'Cause it seems like you've gotta give up
Such a piece of your soul
When you give up the chase
Feeling it hot and cold
You're in Rock'n'Roll
It's the nature of the race
It's the unknown child
So sweet and wild
It's youth
It's too good to waste
To the microphone stand
She says "You can't hold the hand
Of a Rock'n'Roll man
Very long
Or count on your plans
With a Rock'n'Roll man
Very long
Compete with the fans
For your Rock'n'Roll man
For very long
The girls and the bands
And the Rock'n'Roll man"

It's a good song but not one of her best; it's about the circumstance of being a rock 'n roll star; something her listeners can understand but not generally identify with. I read an interview with Joni many years ago where she said that after the For the Roses album came out, some friends of hers told her they thought she was writing a bit too much about the music biz and they'd like her to write more about real life. She took that to heart and wrote very few songs that had any reference to the business she was in for the rest of her career. This is definitely one of those "music biz, life of a rock 'n roller" songs. Doesn't matter which particular rock star she was writing about; she knew plenty of 'em.
this song and the whole album 'For the rosses" isjust unbeleiveable good. if she had a dick she'd have been ten times more popular than dylan. she just so lovely-ly ahead of her time. this, much under acknowledged, album was like man on the moon when it came out people were like "how the fuck did she come up with that?" im still asking.
This song is pretty easy to catch the jist of... Unlike many of Joni's songs (especially her work in the late 70's - The Hissing of Summer Lawns and Don Juan's Reckless Daughter).
But I really, really dig the line:
"She tapes her regrets to the microphone stand"
What a clever way to refer to her own work as a musician.
Okkervil River seems to be really into this song. Not only did they recently cover it, but it is also referenced in at least two of their other songs ('You Can't Hold the Hand of a Rock and Roll Man' and 'Love to a Monster'.)
fallenhorses, you get it. i feel the feel you're feeling. when that beat comes in, my soul lifts all the way up alllll the way! her harmonies are perfect
this song is most likely another one of those tunes about graham nash, definitely some sort of popular musician. wondering how much he's hangin' with the groupies brings you down
