Showdown Lyrics
She cried to the southern wind
About a love that was sure to end
Every dream in her heart was gone
Headin' for a Showdown
Bad dreamer, what's your name
Looks like we're riding on the same train
Looks as though there'll be more pain
There's gonna be a Showdown
And it's rainin' all over the world
It's raining all over the world
Tonight, the longest night
She came to me like a friend
She blew in on a southern wind
Now my heart is turned to stone again
There's gonna be a Showdown
Save me, oh save me
It's unreal, the suffering
There's gonna be a Showdown
And it's rainin' all over the world
It's raining all over the world
Tonight, the longest night
About a love that was sure to end
Every dream in her heart was gone
Headin' for a Showdown
Looks like we're riding on the same train
Looks as though there'll be more pain
There's gonna be a Showdown
It's raining all over the world
Tonight, the longest night
She blew in on a southern wind
Now my heart is turned to stone again
There's gonna be a Showdown
It's unreal, the suffering
There's gonna be a Showdown
It's raining all over the world
Tonight, the longest night

Just thought of more:
Maybe the conversation is about break-ups and how to weather the storm. The rain is the tears. The new girl is now --possibly-- his new girl; she could be his "world". Its raining on her. She is obviously on the rebound. He is more over his ex than she is. But then they face the real showdown: is he meant to be with her intimately when she is so obviously hurting over her recent loss? Or try to wait it out, be her friend, and work towards something more real and lasting? This could be a long night, especially considering his faith in a LTR could be at an all-time low.
And that is one possible interpretation.
whenever i hear this song i can`t help but think of Bill Murray's hair in the bowling showdown scene in Kingpin. good song, it went well in that scene.

Very interesting song. Catchy tune and easy-to-remember lyrics. More behind the scenes of the song. As stated previously, excellent use of violins. Guitar solo is awesome!
Blues-influence in the lyrics is stronger (IMO( than the blues influence in the music.
Raining all over the world.... that's the key. Does everyone feel this way tonight? Some people get down over the slightest thing, others seem not to get down no matter what. The showdown is simple but not easy: turn it around. How do you look at it? Is the rain necessary? Will you survive it? Will it really result in "the levee is gonna break"? Or will flowers grow? How do some people survive through the gloom? How do people in Portland survive when it rains over 200 days per year? Are better drugs (doctor-prescribed of course*( needed?
Even worse, what if the closing paranthesis on your keyboard does not work?

Maybe it's a song about a breakup, and one of the ex-lovers are contemplating suicide. The person can see no future or hope now, because "every dream in her heart was gone." The showdown is about the up and coming battle between whether to live or die, because of the depression, imo.
Odious: abominable; unequivocally detestable; "abominable treatment of prisoners"; "detestable vices"; "execrable crimes"; "consequences odious to those ...
I think that the word findsomepeace was looking for was "ominous."
But that's just my grammar-nazi talking.
This song combines Western imagery with ideas that would be more often seen in Film Noir works--rain as a sigh of ill-to-come vs. a showdown. Interesting.
all time favorite song... definately a blend of neo-noir funk combined with awesome violin stress marks
I believe this song is about a ballistic missile submarine......think about it and please get back to me
