I think the general message is don't forget yout roots, and stay true, and stand up for them.
Ok; to me this song is about someone who jumps into a fight. When there are 2 people fighting one on one and someone else jumps in he's known as the "3rd Man in". Its really a song about cowardice. The Murphy's are really into Hockey and in hockey there is a special penalty for someone who is the 3rd man in a fight (usually because thats what causes a bench clearing brawl) (same concept can be applied to fighting in the street)
the song is telling the perpetrator to stand up like a man, because a real man wouldn't jump in a one on one fight or need someone else to jump in to help him in one. I think the song is about a guy who thinks he's a good friend because he jumps in the fight right away but knows nothing else about friendship. sounds to me like its a message to a knucklehead
after the chorus it says: Some will survive I hope I'm one of them Things aren't what they use to be It makes me sick Our bond has broke and we aren't what we were It's time to face life on my own
then repeats the chorus three more times
