Long Time Gone Lyrics
Daddy sits on the front porch swingin'
Lookin out on a vacant field.
Used to be filled with burly tobacco,
Now he knows it never will.
My brother found work in Indiana,
My sisters a nurse at the old folks home,
Mama's still cookin too much for supper,
and me, I've been a long time gone.
Been a long time gone.
No I ain't hold a rope since I don't know when.
Long time gone,
And it ain't comin back again.,
Delia plays that old church piano,
sitting out on her daddy's farm.
She always thought that we'd be together,
Lord I never meant to do her harm.
Said she could hear me singin in the choir,
Me i heard another song
I caught wind and hit the road running
And Lord I been a long time gone
Been a long time gone,
Lord I ain't had a prayer since i dont know when.
Long time gone
And it ain't coming back again.
Now, me, I went to Nashville,
Trying to be the big deal,
Playing down on Broadway,
Getting it the hard way
Living from a tip jar,
Sleeping in my car,
Hawking my guitar
Yeah I'm gonna be a staaaaaaaaaaaar.
Now me and Deila singing every sunday
watching the children and the garden grow.
We listen to the radio to hear whats cooking,
But the music ain't got no soul.
Now they sound tired but they don't sound haggard.
They've got money but they don't have cash.
They got junior but they don't got hank.
I think, I think, I think, the rest is
A long time gone.
No I ain't hit the roof since I dont know when
and it ain't comin back--
I said long time gone,
No I ain't honked a horn since I dont know when
and it ain't coming bacck again.
I said Long time,
long time,
long time gone.
Whoa its been al long time
Long time,
long time,
long time gone.
Oh its been a long..time... gone.
Long time

Long time gone. Yeah.

The last verse refers to the shape of country music radio these days...stating it has "no soul"...which I agree with.. "they sound tired but they don't sound haggard"....refers to Merle Haggard
"they got money but they don't have cash"...refers to Johnny Cash
"They got junior but they don't have Hank"...Refers to Hank Williams Sr.......
A brilliant country song and Great comentary also....
I think it would be improved if "hoed a row" was "rode a ho'", it was written by a bloke anyway, i think thats what he really meant. He's dead dirty you know, just like JJ.
"hold a rope" should be "hoed a row" sorry
I am from a small town in MS and this song just hits home for me, I have been a long time gone!!
this song doesn't pertain to me at all but i stil like it =)
GREAT song.. doesn't need much explaining but it's definatly more great stuff from the chix
I've just left my radio on Cat Country lately, and heard this song. I'm, sorry, but I've never liked country a bit. But this song is about the first one I heard on the station, and now I never leave the station. I love the Chicks ^_^
I ain't really into country music but when i heard this song it just catched my attention..I luv it
back to the roots, chicks!!! i like the new cd sooo much! anyone get the the "they got money but they don't have Cash" is about the man, johnny cash? just felt i needed to bring that up, in case people were confused. anyway, i like this song -- it kinda transcends what they're talking about to their music career, if you look at it.
This song is really good. I kind of like the beat. It goes back to their early roots. Definitely Dixie Chicks material. I hope they're around for a long long time. :)
