Buy Now Pay Later (Charlie No. 2) Lyrics

Charlie you're not my Charlie anymore
You're screwing it up
You're killing your soul with an audience looking on

If I hadn't left early last night
I would have made a speech to you
How you're not the only one you're going to hurt

If you don't believe me I don't believe in you
Makes it all feel better does it?
Makes you feel like heaven does it?
You loved it and you spent accordingly

You can't afford it now
You'll try and you'll fail
And love it like a little dog
And feed it on the scraps you find
And kiss it while you're still asleep
You buy now and pay later

So where's the problem you can ask if you keep your head up
But the road is long and you're falling asleep at the wheel
Here's a girl going crazy about you and I'm not far behind
Can you care about your friends anymore?

You buy now and pay later

The name "Charlie" refers to one of the original band members Stevie Plunder.

He did have a heroin addiction, and this was his ultimate demise...he ended up jumping off a cliff which Tim captures very very poignantly in one of his rare songs called "The curse stops here".

As for the line "There's a girl gone crazy about you and im not far behind", this makes reference to Stevie's (Charlie's) wife who loved him dearly and was crazy about him...and the "im not far behind" refers to Tim trying to save him from killing himself, and unltimately going crazy trying to do it.

Very sad song...

this is my fave whitlams song. i think that its about someone with a drug addiction, well thats how i see it. this whole bit: 'If you don't believe me I don't believe in you Makes it all feel better does it? Makes you feel like heaven does it? You loved it and you spent accordingly

You can't afford it now You'll try and you'll fail And love it like a little dog And feed it on the scraps you find And kiss it while you're still asleep You buy now and pay later ' it pretty much proves my point (in my eyes)

Nah, i dont think thats it. Its about the how a close friend of theirs (i think band member), committed suicide - goes by the symbolic name Charlie. In doing so, he didnt think about the consequences of his remaining friends..."How you're not the only one you're going to hurt" and how it was a selfish act. "Can you care about your friends anymore?" There are 3 parts to this.

This song is definitely about heroin addiction, anyone who has had a loved one on the shit can instantly recognise the reference. Every cent (scrap) they can find is put towards the only thing that matters to them, the drug. "where's the problem you can ask if you keep your head up"- people when they are first becoming addicted believe they can do it and maintain a normal life. This song is about watching someone in the depths of addiction, hurting as they slowly kill themselves.

totally agree with the drug theme. "buy now pay later" could mean that charlie gets takes the drugs now but will suffer the consequences further down the track. just not sure about "theres a girl gone crazy bout u and im not far behind."

I'm definately agreeing with the drugs theme. Every word of the song is angry but still sad at the person taking the drugs. Like it's killing the onlooker just as much as the user but they're fed up with it and their pain has turned into anger. It's such a sad song.

It is worth noting that "Charlie" is an old slang term for heroin. A reference to Stevie Plunder's heroin addiction.
