Clearly, the narrator of this story chased the promise of finding someone dear to him in the dark. Was it God he was looking for? Was it a lover? Was it just somebody who promised him the light he needed in life? Take your pick, as it's a moot point considering it was only a trap set by the devil.

We are all like this person in the story. Living in the human condition, we are all a bit lost, in the darkness of ignorance and suffering, and we feel around for what, or who, can fulfill us or bring us closure in this life. Even when we have our wits about us, we want desperately to believe that those who promise us the fulfillment we seek, are real. This is why we fall for the deceptions of those who want to destroy us and what we need.
