Off You Lyrics

I've laid this island sun a 1000 times
I'm on it
But I'm going strange
This island's chills and shell cover me
With winded rock
And skies I've yet to see
I tried
I even sent in friends
They did it as a favor
Cause I'm not that way
I am the autumn in the scarlet
I am the make-up on your eyes

I land to sail
Island sail
Yeah, we're movin
Yeah, we're movin
This island's sun I've laid 1000 times
Fortune me
Fortune me
Of all my mistakes
I think I lent you late
Now every set percent seem to come my way

But I've never seen a starlet
Or a riot or the violence of you

I am the autumn in the scarlet
I am the make-up on your eyes

I land to sail
Island sail
Yeah, we're movin'
Yeah, we're movin'
I land to sail
Island sail
Yeah, we're movin'
Yeah, we're movin'
Yeah, we're movin'

We're missing some lyrics here. After "I think I lent you late," it's "Now every set percent seem to come my way." Secondly, this is probably a better time than any to state that the breeders can do absolutely no wrong. Every musical error, weird lyric, every giggle, every beer cracked or cigarette smoke during a song is simply amazing and essential.

Song is about her house on Nantucket, and the friends she would look for to spend time with. "Oh, they're off-island [this weekend]." Kim: "You know what? I'm off YOU." This is from an Aussie radio interview Kim gave around the time of this release.

There are also some obvious references to L.A., or East L.A., where she was living at the time of this album's writing and recording: a starlet, a riot, the violence.

Now that this song is featured in the movie Her, we can look forward to hundreds of new people misinterpreting the lyrics.

this is such a beautiful song, even if kim is a little off key. i think it's about wanting to be left alone.

this is a great song. it would probably make me sad if I could figure out what the hell it was about.

what does she say after "I lent you late" and before "I've never seen a starlet" (and it's starlet, not scarlet)? It sounds like "now every slut person seem to come my way" but not. Every site I've gone to that part's been missing from the lyrics (granted, I only went to like two others besides this one). What's the Deal?

There are several mistakes in these lyrics, but I guess I don't care enough to submit corrections.

@artslut "Now every slip of scent seem(sic) to come my way."

well thinskizzy, I've not seen Her, but after listening to this so many time and never picking it up, it seems like she's singing to the earth itself, and all its elements. "I've never seen a scarlet or a riot or the violence of you" a volcano? "we're moving" like tectonic plates, etc. I'm sure it's probably also about her friends on Nantucket and stuff and more things we will never know
