I Would Be Your Slave Lyrics

3, 4

Walking in the snowy street
Let me understand
Drifting down a silent park
Stumbling over land
Open up your heart to me
Show me who you are
And I would be your slave

Do you sleep in quiet room?
Do you walk in peace?
Do you laugh out loud at me?
No one else that is free
Open up your heart to me
Show me all you are
And I would be your slave

I don't sit around and wait
I don't care for them
I don't see the point at all
No footprints in the sand
I picture laugh out loud at me
A chance to strike me down
Give me peace of mind at last
Show me all you are
Open up your heart to me
And I would be your slave

I don't sit and wait
I don't care for them
I don't see the point at all
No footprints in the sand
I would give you all my love
Nothing else is free
Open up your heart to me
And I would be your slave

Sounds like Bowie is talking to God. But who is his God. Chirst almighty or Satan? If you take a close look at some of his lyrics I'm sure you will find the latter.

the only thing bowie is worshiping in this song, to my understanding and interpretation, is a person (maybe an illusion) that doesn't let herself/himself to be reached in any way. he describes the condition of the pragmatic inhibited man getting as close to love as "i would give you all my love" but "nothing else is free". leaving this strange sentiment unexpressed and with a label.

When I heard this song, I thought the line "I don't care for them" was "I don't give a damn."

i also thought it was 'i don't give a damn'

also 'i picture laugh out loud at me' is probably 'i bet you laugh out loud at me'

@TheThornBirds yes you're being clever. It IS I don't care for them despite the'official lyrics' and I could tell uou the reasoning behind those lyrics but my battery's dying badly so can't

I just noticed that in Labyrinth, Jareth says "I ask for so little. Just fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave." Could it be that Bowie is reaching back to his past work and this song is about Jareth singing to Sarah? He might have even written it around that time and pulled it up for Heathen.

@plor youre probably right!i think its a look into the story from his perspective,"walking in the snowy street, let me understand, drifting down a silent park, stumbling over land"could be him watching her in the start of the movie where she roleplays in the park "I bet you laugh out loud at me,a chance to strike me down"could be him mourning the fact that,to her,he is in fact only a fairytale villian meant to teach her a lesson and then be overthrown for the greater good.It lines up with the fact that in the Labyrinth (behind the scenes) interview,Bowie mentions how Jareth doesn't...
