So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
It ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
If you don't know by now
No it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It'll never do somehow
When your rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your window and I'll be gone
You're the reason I'm traveling on
But don't think twice, it's all right
It ain't no use in turning on your light, babe
The light I never knowed
Oh, it ain't no use in turning on your light, babe
I'm on the dark side of the road
Still I wish there was somethin' you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
We never did too much talking anyway
Don't think twice, it's all right
It ain't no use in calling out my name, boy
Like you've never done before
No it ain't no use in calling out my name, boy
Cause I can't hear you anymore
Oh, I'm a-thinking and a-wonderin' walking down the road
Said I once loved a man, a child, I'm told
I give him my heart but he wanted my soul
Don't think twice, it's all right
So long honey, babe
Where I'm bound, I can't tell
Goodbye's too good a word, babe
So I'll just say, "Fare thee well"
I ain't saying you treated me unkind
You could've done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it's all right
Don't think twice, it's all right
If you don't know by now
No it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It'll never do somehow
When your rooster crows at the break of dawn

this is one of the greatest verses ever written--there's so much meaning in this last part of the song. "you coulda done better but i don't mind, you just kinda wasted my precious time." those are some intense words right there. dylan rules
Amen brother.
@goofyasfuck <br /> The verse has incredible depth. This is it, the split, the goodbye, and while not cordial, it's at least polite...<br /> <br /> Except that what is really being said, in a really not very hidden way, is "Go fuck yourself, bitch, I'm outta here..."<br /> <br /> Agreed, one of the greatest verses ever written.
