True Rulers Lyrics

I see you sitting there
looking just a little like me
We're both too proud to say anything real
Things are bad, but when you ask me if it's all over,
don't you know how I feel?

I remember back at BHS,
killing time on the courtyard steps
Thinking we were rebels
but the world was unimpressed
It was just so easy to love you,
the way you laughed at all my best defenses
Made the world's most convincing actor
come back to his natural sense

We ain't got much,
but we got each other,
and I can see
that's all that I wanted all along

We were born in a minefield
in a world that's spinning like a roulette wheel,
where everybody is so scared bu they can't slow down
You were the first good thing
I let myself in
And if I ever made you doubt I love you,
let me tell you what a fool I've been

I agree it's the best Common Rider song. It's about when Jesse Michaels was in high school. At Berkely High School (BHS). I think the line "thinkin we were rebels" kind of refers to them being "punks" and kind of being the outcast rebel types. But it's kind of a love song also. I have a MUCH longer explanation for the song but I'm not gonna fucking waste my time any longer. They broke up... Second time I've fell in love with a band of Jesse Michaels. Fool me once... Fool me twice...

Yup, this is such a perfect song. Simple pop tune about breaking down the teenage fronts we put on and just being real with the one you love.

This came out in 1999 when I was 17 and it resonated so huge for me.

(to OneThirdOfCTW: I know you wrote that comment 6 years ago, and you're probably not around anymore, but Jesse's got a new band called "Classics of Love" (obv based on the CR song), check 'em out.)
