I Stopped To Fill My Car Up Lyrics
i stopped to fill my car up
the car felt good that day
i didn't know where i was going
but it felt good for a change
a five and a pocket full of silver
i paid the lady no change
and then it started to piss down
i started driving again
and then i looked up
and looked in the mirror behind me
a man round forty in the back seat
must have stepped in when i was empty
so why's he sat there just waiting
likely to smash my face in
he had a bag full of money
he said just drive me away
i didn't know where i was going
yet it felt good to be strange
and still i look up
and look in the mirror behind me
curiosity is over
he stepped down from the car
he pulled a gun from his jacket
said i was going to die
it gives me so much satisfaction
to watch you beg and cry
well i just made up this story
to get your attention makes me smile
i never looked up or looked
in the mirror behind me
the car felt good that day
i didn't know where i was going
but it felt good for a change
a five and a pocket full of silver
i paid the lady no change
and then it started to piss down
i started driving again
and looked in the mirror behind me
must have stepped in when i was empty
so why's he sat there just waiting
likely to smash my face in
he had a bag full of money
he said just drive me away
i didn't know where i was going
yet it felt good to be strange
and look in the mirror behind me
he stepped down from the car
he pulled a gun from his jacket
said i was going to die
it gives me so much satisfaction
to watch you beg and cry
well i just made up this story
to get your attention makes me smile
in the mirror behind me

awesome voice and music.
a wonderful song that builds up a strange image in my head. it always reminds me of a kind of kidnapping or so. when i first listened to this song, i was really scared and afraid somehow. but "well i just made up this story, to get your attention makes me smile" makes quite clear, that kelly (i think, he himself wrote this lyrics) isn't serious about this. nice point.
this was my ex-girlfriend's and my song...yeah, so that realtionship didn't last too long.
kelly jones really has the greatest power to make us wanna cry. This one and billy davey's daughter... Do you think he is that sad himself?
i love this song, i'd neverheard any stereophonics before i heard this and everything else after this sounded poor. this song is amazing. i love the part "well i just made up this story, to get your attention makes me smile" this shows how unless something like this is written listeners take songs seriously.
A great song fullstop. but check it out on the "A Day at the Races" video or n e of their live vids for a great outro.superb

This song is cool. I love the way it sounds, and I love how it makes you think!
It's a cool song true, but Kelly's get-out clause leaves you feeling short changed. It makes you wonder if it's more about self indulgence. Maybe it has a greater context in the album.... which I need to listen to more.
This maybe is a bit like "The Emporers New Clothes" about music, well at the end anyway. Great song anyway.
Saw The Phonics at Nottingham last week and Kelly introduced this song, and said it was about a time they stopped to fill up the car and when they got back in there was a man with a gun in the back of the car. Id always assumed due to the afforementioned get-out at the end that this didnt actually happen. But the way Kelly was talking this really did happen
