I went out with a girl just a little while
And I loved her so, though she cramped my style
Cause every time I'd reach she'd turn away
And every time I'd call she'd turn and say
"I'm sorry Dave, I got no time, I've got my life, my life is mine."
So after a year or maybe more
I finally got a clue, and I found the door

Well I've done it before and I'll do it again
I've seen the path and I've seen the end
I've said it before and I'll say it again
I think I'm better off just dating Miss Michigan

So a single man is what I am
And I'll play the field do what I can
I meet a girl she seems alright
So I say hello and I spend the night
Next thing I know she's at my door
And she's calling my house about ever hour
I know I'm wrong, cause I set my own trap
But all I want now is my solitude back

Oh baby, I know you're the one for me
When other girls treat me bad you're always right by my side
Sugar, no one could ever take your place
Cause you got everything I need
Ahw yeah honey you're the one for me, hands down

So I meet a girl I know is right
She's got it all she's just my type
So I take it slow, and I show I'm real
And I treat her right, show how I feel
Next thing you know I'm so in love
And it's only her that I'm thinking of
But I was such a fool I can see today
Should have known from the start that the girl was gay

Cause we've all dated Miss Michigan at one point in our lives or another and for most of us many points in our life. (for those who are confused, this is a song about masturbation and a rather clever one at that in my oppinion. Michigan is somewhat shaped like a hand and people from the state will often use their hand to describe what part of the state they are from)

i'm still very confused, where does the masturbation come in? and what does us michigan peoples using our hands to show where we are from have to do with anything? un-confuse me pleez.

Darcie: "Dating Miss Michigan" is a term for masturbation... a somewhat common one in the area in and around Michigan... the way he described how they describe the state by using their hand, is how he showed that Michigan is indeed shaped like a hand...

Haha.. I liked this song before, but now I totally get it. Hahahahaha... oh man I love that saying now. That is great. So great. Oh man. Sorry. It's just that that is hillarious. I'm going to force that phrase in every conversation I can. Great song. Much funnier now that I get that one line...

I live in Michigan, and NOBODY SAYS that as a term for masturbation, but HAHA that's HILARIOUS.

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere. In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
