We Belong

Although their relationship is challenging, the investment of emotion and time that they have made in each other presents them with no choice but to press on, for better or worse. As lightning flashes and thunder inevitably follows, they are forever linked - regardless of whether they accept that fact or reject it.

He knows just what to say to hurt her in an argument and she has a hard time communicating. She often sits in silence when they are arguing — while he talks at her - because she just doesn’t know how to respond to him. Even if she felt strong enough to fight back in like manner, she is not sure that the point would be. It would solve nothing. It seems that his insecurity about their relationship is a primary culprit in much of their fighting - "the doubts that complicate [his] mind."

The fights have become habitual — almost routine. Their interactions are often unhealthy and prescribed by previous fights to the point where the truth of the situation is obscured by the same tired phrases and rhetoric they always use with each other in every fight. They are exhausted and know the relationship is dysfunctional. They can no longer see a peaceful future ahead of them. Even so, there is no going back to the days before they were in a relationship. They have already intertwined their lives to such a degree that turning back is unthinkable.

The last verse offers no solutions. She says to him essentially, “Let’s just go to sleep and try not ache anymore.” She wants them to do the best they can to start fresh the next day, because she doesn’t want to leave him. She will continue on faith that a solution can be found one day based upon nothing more than the fact that they care about each other far more than either of them realize and because everything she knows and everything she sees is linked in some way to him. Since life separated from one another is not an option, they have to just take a break from fighting, rest and hope for better times.

To me, is about accepting our humanity And not trying to become gods (higher than humanity) Or animals (lower than humanity) But just accepting life as is and being human and in love, etc.

It's also a lovesong about a girl who understands her humanity Singing to a boy who is trying to be something he's not On an ego trip or whatever.

And she's trying to tell him: "You don't have to be anything in order to belong to this earth." "We already belong." "We belong to the light." "We belong to the thunder."

The line about the "words" they've "both fallen under" I think Is a refrerence to organized philosophies and modes of thought That she and he have believed in in the past But they've "fallen under" them... a.k.a.... they've been oppressed by them Rather than belonging to them in a positive way

The Poet William Blake said:

"Both of us read the bible day and night But you read black where I read white."

Meaning that people have used timeless truths as weapons for years Rather than as healing, as they were intended to be. So that's the whole 'we belong to the words we've both falllen under" analysis.

The line:

"Maybe I just wouldn't know what to do with my strength anyway"

Reinforces my perceptions about this song

She is telling him that there's no need to try to be strong. Just be!

I never understood this song until now. Funny how some things can totally change your perspective and suddenly even the most commonplace things begin to have a new meaning... "I've invested too much time to give you up that easy".

It's about being married to your soulmate and being on the brink of divorce.

"Whatever we deny or embrace For worse or for better... We belong together"

"For worse or for better" is again, a direct reference to marriage vows but the song implies a deeper meaning than just the superficiality of the contract of marriage--it implies a sense that there's something elemental about the relationship that makes them intrinsically inseparable.

to me it means that your so in love, but theres so many conflicts in the relationship but you dont care cuz u know you'll be together in the end stronger than ever.

I think this can also apply to admirers: A girl admires a boy that always turns her away. She sometimes wonders if it'd be best to turn back only to remember that she's in deep enough, has invested all her time in making him hers, there's no turning back, and she's going to succeed no matter what.

To me this song can be a conversation between the soul and it's creator, or two soul mates long lost, lovers or complements in some way, not necessarily in a sexual relationship.

"We belong to the light, we belong to the thunder." The light and thunder of the heart of God. The soul which has drifted away from it's first love, the love of it's creator Father.

"We belong to the sound of the words we've both fallen under." The lies of this fallen world, the pride of self injuring the innocence of the spirit; two partners who have for some reason fallen apart, and are not in proper relationship to one another.

Where the mercy of God says, "Close your eyes and try to do your best to wash the palette clean." Basically, healing the wounds of bad choices, of scars, hurts, the past wrongs which were never righted. The Father of Lights would heal all things which have gone wrong in time and eternity.

"I hear your voice inside me, I see your face everywhere." The soul responds, seeing the face of God in all things, and truly knowing it is safe in the palm of God's hand.

I think it's about a married couple that hit a rough patch... they don't want to accept and realize that something is wrong bc they still care for each other and have made a commitment to each other, so they just try and make it work

It's about a married couple that fight all the time. Part of her wants to leave him, but she doesn't. She's been putting up with him for a long time, and nothing's changing. She tells herself she's invested too much time in this relationship to leave it, but that's just rationalizing. The more honest reason emerges when she says their relationship is "a habit." She feels the pain, but she didn't leave before, and nothing has changed to push her out.

"the words we've both fallen under" is their wedding vows. She made a commitment to this marriage and, for better or for worse, she's sticking to it.
