Is it just me, or does this song sound like they're both comitting suicide. I'd have to disagree with you, nightkite, I don't think they speak for themselves.

The song was written about two people who were very very much in love. But they realized they were not meant to be together. Its the feeling when you know someone you really really care about is just not right.
