Fat boy goes to the pool,
Sees his reflection,
Doesn't know what to do.
He feels little inside,
But filled with pride.
Oh, fragile flame,
When no one sees the same.
Fat boy goes about his day,
Tryin' to think of
Funny things to say,
Like, "This is just a game I play",
And, "I like me this way",
Oh, fragile flame,
When no one feels the same.
Hush, sleep,
Don't think,
Just eat.
You're Daddy's little boy,
You're Mama's pride and joy.
You know they love you,
But not because they hold you.
And fat boy says,
"Wouldn't it be nice
If I could melt myself like ice,
Or outrun my skin
And just be pure wind?"
Oh, fragile flame,
Sometimes I feel the same.
Sees his reflection,
Doesn't know what to do.
He feels little inside,
But filled with pride.
Oh, fragile flame,
When no one sees the same.
Tryin' to think of
Funny things to say,
Like, "This is just a game I play",
And, "I like me this way",
Oh, fragile flame,
When no one feels the same.
Don't think,
Just eat.
You're Mama's pride and joy.
You know they love you,
But not because they hold you.
"Wouldn't it be nice
If I could melt myself like ice,
Or outrun my skin
And just be pure wind?"
Oh, fragile flame,
Sometimes I feel the same.

This is my favorite Jewel song. It's about a boy who really doesn't feel comfortable in his own skin, and he tries to pretend like he does. At the end when Jewel sings "Sometimes I feel the same", she is saying that sometimes we all feel down about ourselves, and that's ok.
I totally agree with neitzsche 66. Alot of people use being funny or making jokes to cover up their own pain, and that is what 'fat boy' does and I think everyone has done it at one time or another.

This part is so touching and it reminds me alot of my boyfriend. He isn't fat in any shape or form, but he's really self consious. I actually judged him for being somewhat overboard silly and sometimes even rude/mean in the beginning, but it comes down to people and trying to deal with them and yourself and everyone has something their ashamed of or have lack of confidence about.
It's a really touching song.
I get chills listening to this song. It's simple, but touching.
I remember in a Rolling Stone interview she said this song was about a childhood friend of hers who was happy as a child but became depressed as an adolescent because he was made fun of for being fat, and he ended up committing suicide on Jewel's family's farm.
i think this song is about someone who looks one way and even though they can change it, they don't want to; it's their shell. i know i'm fat, and sometimes i don't want to change it because i know it keeps people away, and that's not so bad. this kid tells himself he likes the way he is even though he doesn't because he's scared to change. at the end, when jewel says she sometimes feels the same it's to say that we're all somewhat afraid of change but hey, that's okay.
