I watched you fly...
Fly away from me.
In the night, as the
World around us slept.

You know I love you still.
Don't turn away from me;
I need you here.

Please don't look away.
Am I just a shadow in your light?
I want you to know that I love you,
But you already know,
So it doesn't really matter.

If I could reach past the stars
And climb to the moon with you,
We'd be so far away, with my hands,
I'd reach past the stars to you.

If I could dive from the sky
And soar through the clouds with you,
In my dreams I would fly to you,
But it doesn't really matter.

If I said I was sorry for the things
I said and did to you,
Sorry for all the things I did
And the things I'll never do.

You'd turn away and smile
And I'd say that I love you.
But you already know
So it doesn't really even matter at all.

Are you missing me?
Because I know that I've missed you.
You're so far away, I need you here.
I wish that you would look at me,
But it doesn't really matter.

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
