Don't Know When but a Day Is Gonna Come Lyrics
Was it true what I heard about the son of God?
Did he come to save? Did he come at all?
And if I dried his feet with my dirty hair
Would he make me clean again?
They say they don't know when but a day's gonna come
When there won't be a moon and there won't be a sun
It will just go black, it will just go back
To the way it was before
I knew a lovely girl with such pretty pride
And every man wanted her, yeah, and so did I
Yeah, and so did I
But she up and died in a fit of vanity
Now men with purple hearts carry silver guns
And they'll kill a man for what his father's done
But what my father did, no, it don't mean shit
I'm not him
And you think I need some discipline well, I've had my share
I've been sent to my room, I've been sat in a chair
And I held my tongue, I didn't plug my ears
No, I got a good talking to
And I don't know why, but I still try to smile
When they talk at me like I'm just a child
Well, I'm not a child
No, I am much younger than that
But now I've read some books and I've grown quite brave
If I could just speak up I think I would say
That there is no truth
There is only you and what you make the truth
So, I'll just sing my songs and I'll pass a hat
And then I'll leave your town and I'll never look back
No I won't look back because the road is clear
And laid out ahead of me
And I'll get home I'll meet my friends at our favorite bar
We'll get some lighter heads for our heavy hearts
And we'll share a drink, yeah we'll share our fears
And they'll know how I love them
They will know how I love
They will know how I love them
I'm nothing without their love
Now I don't know when but day's gonna come
When there won't be a moon and there won't be a sun
It will all go black, it will all go back
To the way it's supposed to be
Is it true what they say about the son of God?
Did he die for us? Did he die at all?
If I sold my soul, for a bag of gold to you
Which one of us would be the foolish one?
Which one of us would be the fool?
Which one of us would be the foolish one?
Which one of us would be the fool?

wow...thats amazing! He grew up a catholic so is this song just questioning religion and everything he learned as a kid??
i agree with b-rad that this song has to deal with his child hood and questioning religion and what he was taught as a kid. I think also that in the "But what my father did, no, it don't mean shit, I'm not him" part, it talks about how, if a member in your family did something, ppl will look at you for what the person did, and not for anything that you do.This song's great, Conor knows what ppl need for life too, Friends/Love, Writing/Expressing yourself, and Alcohol (going out and havin a good time)
I kind of experienced what you're talking about here. First with the question of childhood religion. Definitely been through that. Grew up catholic and never knew if it was right. Then the next part, about people looking at you for what your family did and not what you did, I've definitely been through that as well- I was looked down on because my family members had gotten into things and I was kind of like next in line to be a screw-up.

Conor's far beyond amazing in what he does. I love this song.

"there is no truth. there is only you and what you make the truth."
it's my new life philosophy.
two quick notes
"And if I dried his feet with my dirty hair Would he make me clean again?"
I get the image of kneeling down and praying, asking for forgiveness. Basic Catholic Sacrament of Reconciliation that if you go with sincerity, your sins will be forgiven but some see this as a "get out of jail free card" to not take responsiblity for their actions and that god will always forgive me. (i was there once)
and the truth line
Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, not even if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense. this is from the Buddha i interpret it more as think for yourself but that line really could go about 10000 different ways. Psychological Egoism, Normative Subjective Relativism, a lot of eastern spiritual stuff. if we interpret truth subjectively, that runs the risk of creating some large large egos. alright that wasn't quick but hopefully insightful. later dudes
"But what my father did, no, it don't mean shit I'm not him" That part always reminds me of my father with my granddad.
My dad grew up in a small town and his dad was a lawyer. His entire life all he's ever heard of is how great a lawyer his dad was and how he should be one too and yadda yadda yadda.
My dad always responds the same way "My father was a great man, but I can't be the same man he was. We all have to find our own way."
I think this song really focuses on deciding on things for yourself (religion, the truth, your direction in life etc.) In the end no one can explain to you. People can help you and assist you and discipline and try to explain to you as much as they want but its up to you to figure it all out.
I think is this the most instrumentally challening song Bright Eyes has done to date. Wow. It really builds and explodes. The lyrics are a bit screwed up there from what he says, though...
Hey everyone I just corrected the song. Hopefully its all correct. This song is absolutely amazing and very powerful. I write poetry....oh how I envy Conor hehe. Anyways the song is beautiful one of the best songs off the Lifted CD.
This is one of my favorites from this album. I just saw them in concert a few weeks ago and they are absolutely amazing. That was also the first time I heard this song. I think it's brilliant and everyone can relate to it in some way.
I was at the San Fransisco show on Sunday night, the 13th of October. That was the first time i had heard that song and i thought it was hella sick
GREAT song :) very heart felt and i like it alots!
