Say Goodnight Lyrics

I heard you late last night
You know you talk too much
Not everything comes through these walls
But just enough
To hear the things that I don't want to hear

I heard you late last night
I wish I had my distance
I hear you crash around and say
That no one listens
I wish that I would hear you say goodnight

Nobody cares
Especially me
But I can't help myself
As I fall asleep
Turn out the lights
Turn back the sheets
Say goodnight and turn me on
Turn out the lights
Turn back the sheets
Turn me on

I heard you late last night
You were in such a hurry
Not a sound behind these walls
Makes me worry
I wish that I could hear you say goodnight

Nobody cares
Especially me
But I can't help myself
As I fall asleep
Turn out the lights
Turn back the sheets
Say goodnight and turn me on
Turn out the lights
Turn back the sheets
Turn me on

Say goodnight...
Say goodnight...

Nobody cares
Especially me
But I can't help myself
As I fall asleep
Turn out the lights
Turn back the sheets
Say goodnight and turn me on
Turn out the lights
Turn back the sheets
Turn me on

a new jay-comment on this song: "ya know how sometimes.. umm.. the neighbors in your building.. um.. will be, uh, loud? well, this song's about, well... what you might do when you hear them.. yeah." (or words to that affect)
in other words, this song really is about masturbation. ...as if there was ever a doubt. ;)

Well...despite the subject matter that this song presents, I still really like it. His voice sounds really nice in it. Intense.

this is strange that you all took this as a mostly sexual song. everytime that i hear it i imagined that it was much more a song about someone whose significant other is having an affair, yet he chooses to pretend to ignore it. "I heard you late last night I wish I had my distance I hear you crash around and say That no one listens I wish that I would hear you say goodnight." she's in the other room after she thinks he's gone off to bed and is talking to her other man on the phone about how she wishes she could be with him, and the narrorater just wishes that she would come back to bed and say goodnight and that it is him that she loves.

as for "I heard you late last night You were in such a hurry Not a sound behind these walls Makes me worry I wish that I could hear you say goodnight" i believe that maybe his woman had left to go see her other lover. but, hey, maybe i'm wrong and it is about masturbation. =/

I got something completely different from this song. I didn't even see these two as roommates, but instead, that they were staying in two different apartments, but their bedrooms had the same wall. I also hear two voices in this song. The first voice is:

"I heard you late last night You know you talk too much Not everything comes through these walls But just enough To hear the things that I don't want to hear

I heard you late last night I wish I had my distance I hear you crash around and say That no one listens I wish that I would hear you say goodnight

Nobody cares Especially me But I can't help myself As I fall asleep Turn out the lights Turn back the sheets Say goodnight and turn me on Turn out the lights Turn back the sheets Turn me on"

which leads me to believe that the person in the other room that this voice is speaking about maybe has some problems, and the voice speaking may try to convince him/herself that "nobody cares, especially me," but he/she really does, and would really like to help the other out with their emotional/mental troubles.

The second voice:

"I heard you late last night You were in such a hurry Not a sound behind these walls Makes me worry I wish that I could hear you say goodnight

Nobody cares Especially me But I can't help myself As I fall asleep Turn out the lights Turn back the sheets Say goodnight and turn me on Turn out the lights Turn back the sheets Turn me on"

is the voice from the other room, which, every night, hears the other person leaving in a hurry for what I can only assume is a date with a different person. This voice is either in love or at least just interested in the other, and they, too, try to convice themself that "nobody cares, especially me," but deep down, they are jealous and want to be taken out by the other.

The last part of the song would be both voices at the same time "Say goodnight... Say goodnight...

Nobody cares Especially me But I can't help myself As I fall asleep Turn out the lights Turn back the sheets Say goodnight and turn me on Turn out the lights Turn back the sheets Turn me on"

which would be when the two meet. The first voice would go to the other room to tell the other person to be quiet, and then they would have crazy, raunchy sex... or just go to sleep. I haven't quite decided that part yet.

Yeah. That's what I've always gotten from this, basically. This is my favorite song of all time (excluding the Beatles' stuff), and I've always really liked it. It's just so beautiful.

But maybe it is just about masturbating. Who knows?
