Laura Laurent Lyrics
Laura, are you still living there
On your estate of sorrows?
You used to leave it occasionally
But now you don't even bother
To ride that commuter train, west to Chicago
To stroll through the greenery in the park past the statues
How their eyes seemed to follow you like a hated addiction
Their beauty carved out of absolutes that you could never claim
Or even envision
Laura, you were the saddest song
In the shape of a woman
Yeah, I thought you were beautiful
But I wept with your movements
But I hope that you're laughing now from that place on the carpet
Where we shared a sleeping bag in your sister's apartment
Oh, how she would worry so
You know, I was just a stranger
But she asked me to care for you, yes she did
And I went and betrayed her
But do you know we're in high demand, Laura, us people who suffer
Because we don't take to arguing
And we're quick to surrender
Well, I think I would call tonight if I still had your number
Your thoughts have always lain close to mine
Yeah, we were both skipping supper
But you should never be embarrassed by your trouble with living
Because it's the ones with the sorest throats, Laura
Who have done the most singing
Everybody

Tonight I went to see Bright Eyes and right at the end when they started singing the la la la's Conor handed me the mic and let me sing ..
I’m surprised nobody has mentioned this but Laura Laurent was the lead singer for the band ‘The Lazarus Plot.’ A very underground emo core, “melancholic-grunge” music group from the 90s.
There isn’t very much information about Laura and her music career, she remains a mystery.
Because of the lack of media around her name, (besides her work with the band.) It’s fair to consider that this could be her eulogy.
“Because it's the ones with the sorest throats, Laura Who have done the most singing“
I think this line is the nail in the coffin for me. I infer that he’s referring to Laura in this line.
Laura sang with a lot of emotion. Screams rooted in despair, whispers weeping ephemerally.

i'm surpised noone has said anything about this song yet. it's so amazing.
"But you should never be embarrassed by your trouble with living 'Cause it's the ones with the sorest throats, Laura Who have done the most singing"
Conor Oberst is even more amazing.
I'd probably say that this was my favourite bright eyes song. the words and the way they're sung just totally grab me, right from the first line. "Laura, you were the saddest song..." is my favourite line, though "Well, I think I would call tonight...", for personal reasons, makes me feel like I'm not alone after all
this song makes me cry. it kind of sounds like he is singing to someone who has passed away.
everytime i hear hated addition i die inside
yea the hated addiction part is my favorite part. He said at my show that Laura was a friend of his who was very very sad
Apparently it's about an old friend of his, she was very depressive. At some point, he chose music over her.
<3 I'mma Laura.. and this song means somethin' specail.
he mentions Laura in "Landlocked Blues"--
"and laura's asleep in my bed.."
