His Name Was John Lyrics
She can account for
All of the men in her past
Where they are now, who they married
How many kids they have
She knew their backgrounds
Family and friends
A few she even talks to now and then
But there is one
She can't put her finger on
There is one who never leaves her thoughts
And she thinks his name was John
A chance meeting
A party a few years back
Broad shoulders and blue eyes
His hair was so black
He was a friend of a friend you could say
She let his smile just sweep her away
And in her heart
Oh, she knew that it was wrong
But too mcuh wine and she left his bed at dawn
And she thinks his name was John
Now each day is one day that's left in her life
She won't know love, have a marriage
Or sing lullabies
She lays alone and cries herself to sleep
Cause she let a stranger kill her hopes and her dreams
And all her friends
Say what a pity, what a loss
And in the end, when she was barely hangin' on
All she could say is
She thinks his name was John
All of the men in her past
Where they are now, who they married
How many kids they have
She knew their backgrounds
Family and friends
A few she even talks to now and then
But there is one
She can't put her finger on
There is one who never leaves her thoughts
And she thinks his name was John

Broad shoulders and blue eyes
His hair was so black

This is an excellent song. I saw her in concert when I was 11. She sang this song, and at the end of the song they had a "grave" raise onto the stage. I didn't really understand the meaning until later, and later find that this song hits so close to home. AIDS is what split my family up, essentially. Wildestdream is right - it doesn't matter how careful you are, one chance taken. Very sad, but excellent song.
I heard part of the song and couldent help but keep having it run throught my head its a very powerful song and should be a warning to young wild people to be careful

this song is about a woman who has a one night stand and gets AIDS. thats sad isn't it?
it's sad, but it just means that it doesn't matter how careful you are, one little slip-up and this will be where you are...one of my favorites
this song is very sad but its real life and people can relate to it.
Well, she shouldnt have had a one night stand huh.
I didn't know this was about Aids untill now, just thought she had quite a heartache... It makes more sence now though.
I saw Reba in concert a while back and in that concert while singing this song she was on a pedalstool and was raised up in the air and all around here was a sheet covered in names and at the end of the song the name John was luminated on all four sides of the stage. Very awesome and talented artist!!
That's why there are condom vending machines in every gas station bathroom. 75 cents can save your life.
wow... had no idea the guy had aides...
I knew after I heard it a few times what the song was about.
It was wrong of her to have a one night stand, but sometimes it happens. I have never had one, but then I have been married to two of my three partners.
It is less heard of women planning a one night stand then a guy, but it does happen.
