Well, she was an American girl
Raised on promises
She couldn't help thinkin' that there
Was a little more to life
Somewhere else
After all it was a great big world
With lots of places to run to
Yeah, and if she had to die tryin'
She had one little promise
She was gonna keep

Oh yeah, alright
Take it easy baby
Make it last all night
She was an American girl

Well, it was kind of cold that night
She stood alone on her balcony
Yeah, she could hear the cars roll by
Out on 441
Like waves crashin' on the beach
And for one desperate moment there
He crept back in her memory
God it's so painful
Something that's so close
And still so far out of reach

Oh yeah, alright
Take it easy, baby
Make it last all night
She was an American girl

Ooh
Uh-huh-huh
Uh-huh-huh
Oh yeah

I don't know if I think that this is absolutely about suicide... The first verse you have the words "if she had to die trying she had one little promise she was going to keep". I do think it's about the feeling of revenge that comes from being broken-up with by your first love, or revenge from not being loved by a significant male figure in your life, and how a first love relates a lot to all the other dreams and empty promises American girls are force-fed about how grand life can be if we only try hard enough and work fast enough...

It's funny because in L.A. the ocean isn't that far away, but no one can see or hear or smell the ocean from their apartment unless they're part of the uber-rich. I like how Petty paints a picture of this, comparing the ocean of L.A. being so close but so far and replaced by concrete and cars as a reminder to anyone who's "trying to make it in this town" just how far they still have to go to acheive their dreams and have that ocean view. Just like this girl's dreams of making a name for herself, of finding a man who really loves her, and she's just sick of working at it, sick of all the empty promises.

Death was close...she could end it all by jumping into that ocean that wasn't really an ocean at all but just a mindless line of cars...but then for a second the man who broke her heart popped back into her mind and she remembered that she made a promise to herself to get revenge, follow her dreams, make something of herself even if it killed her...so she'll go on racing through life forcing herself to make promises about all that life has in store for her, and hopefully run across someone who will teach her what it means to relax and not fight so hard...

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
