Last night I had a dream. I found myself in a desert called Cyberland.
It was hot. My canteen had sprung a leak and I was thirsty.
Out of the abyss walked a cow -- Elsie.
I asked if she had anything to drink.

Then a little bulldog entered. His name (we have learned) was Benny.
And although he once had principles,
He abandoned them to live as a lap dog to a wealthy daughter of the revolution.
"That's bull," he said.
"Ever since the cat took up the fiddle, that cow's been jumpy.
And the dish and the spoon were evicted from the table -- and eloped ...
She's had trouble with that milk and the moon ever since.
Maybe it's a female thing.

They were down on their luck - knocked on my doghouse door.
I said, "Not in my backyard, utensils! Go back to China!"
"The only way out is up," Elsie whispered to me.

Parched. "Have some milk."
I lowered myself beneath her and held my mouth to her swollen udder
And sucked the sweetest milk I'd ever tasted."
(Maureen makes a slurping, sucking sound)
"Climb on board," she said.
And as a harvest moon rose over Cyberland,
We reared back and sprang into a gallop.
Leaping out of orbit!!!
I awoke singing

at first i thought this was simply a protest song, with no real meaning besides entertainment, but when examined...

sisi no eviction is the main POINT and that linea bout benny does refer to him being their friend and then 'abandoninG" them to be wealthy and uptight this song is SO HARD to analyze i think either maureen or joanne is the cow but if maureen is "the cow" then joanne would have to be the cat ...

its very clever, but i really hate this song...it just annoys me
i agree, it's clever as all hell.. but, just the way it's "sung".. no. just. no. it's okay the first time you hear it. maybe. after that, it's just annoying. i always skip it when i watch rent or listen to the soundtrack. so basically. good lyrics. baaaad presentation.

lol my friend and i sing that all the time... randomly and ppl just look @ us weird. lol i also really like Idina Menzel, she is a really good singer. even tho this song is wierd and stuff, but u do have to admit that it is really funny!!

When I first heard this, I thought it was the most annoying thing on the movie. Then one day, a while ago, I decided to look at the lyrics to it. Its amazing how well they were able to make it symbolize the evictions that were going down in "Tent City" or the Bohemias.. I love the symbles used.
