It'll All Work Out Lyrics

She wore faded jeans and soft black leather
She had eyes so blue they looked like weather
When she needed me I wasn't around
That's the way it goes, it'll all work out

There were times apart, there were times together
I was pledged to her for worse or better
When it mattered most I let her down
That's the way it goes, it'll all work out

Chorus
It'll all work out eventually
Better off with him than here with me

2nd Chorus
It'll all work out eventually
Maybe better with him than here with me

Now the wind is high and the rain is heavy
And the water's rising in the levee
Still I think of her when the sun goes down
It never goes away, but it all works out

This is my song.

It's like, the story of my life. Down to the details (faded jeans, leather jacket, blue eyes, him not being around..)

Anyway.. the meaning is pretty obvious... There was a girl he loved but when she needed him he wasn't there for her, and now that she's moved on and is with someone else, he admits she's better off with him.

He wishes he had been there, and the regret never goes away, but everything works out.

Love love love this song. <3

I haven't checked the date, but I do know Tom went through a rough time with the divorce he had with his first wife. Just throwing it out there but I believe this song could be about her. As some of you have written its easy to connect to this song from personal experience especially in relationships. So just to throw my opinion in I am guessing that this song is just sharing his feelings about his wife and the relationship that he has now lost, he is very much detailed, but is not so specific, but thats just Tom's...

Rated 0 rate down rate up I haven't checked the date, but I do know Tom went through a rough time with the divorce he had with his first wife. Just throwing it out there but I believe this song could be about her. As some of you have written its easy to connect to this song from personal experience especially in relationships. So just to throw my opinion in I am guessing that this song is just sharing his feelings about his wife and the relationship that he has now lost, he is very much detailed, but is not so specific, but thats just Tom's style. He is one of the bests, I absolutely love this song!

My Interpretation

"It'll all work out eventually" is true. With enough time the hurt and suffering that I've inflicted on others and that which I've endured just won't matter. Death and time work everything out.
It'll all work out eventually.

my current relationship song, hands down. i can picture my fiance singing this to me, and it all fits perfectly, right down to the nitty gritty. i wear faded jeans and soft black leather. i have blue eyes. Brandon wants a break for seven weeks while he gets his grades in school back up. i need him, and he only calls me once a week. so when i needed him, he wasn't around. we have our times apart and our times together, we are pledged to each other for worse or better. he's letting me down, and he knows it. he thinks i might be better off with his brother, who i fell in love with three years ago, but that's all gone now. though he thinks that he is doing the right thing in this situation so he can create a future for our family, i'm still the one he thinks about when the sun goes down. and we both know that through any issues we have, it'll all work out.

I think this song is so beautifully and strategically written. I am definitely someone who will appreciate a song more when I can see that there is thought put in to every line. The first verse is so clever in making you think that even though he let her down in whatever way (you can make your own mind up to what it was) she forgave him. It'll work out for them, things will get better. You don't really think about it being in the past tense until the song continues to play out and you realise that he has lost something so incredibly close to him. There's not so much a tone of guilt in the lyrics that I see, but rather a longing. The last verse paints such a lonely, solitary picture of regret and aching. This is my absolute favourite Tom Petty song, because it puts you right in the scene. You really do feel the emotions, regardless if you've been through them before. Not many songs can achieve that.

This is about his then-wife Jane. From the liner notes to the Playback box set:

Comments: Recorded at: Sound City, Van Nuys, CA and M.C. Studios, Los Angeles, CA. Mixed at: A&M Studios, Hollywood, CA (MCA Records) "That's one of my favorites ever," Tom says. "It's a durable song." Asked what inspired it, Petty is quiet for a minute and then says, "I think Jane and I were probably fighting at the time. We had a brief separation during that album. I don't think it was about that necessarily, but that inspired it." Which adds poignance to lines like "When she needed me I let her down." Petty has always worked hard to keep his private life private. Asked about his wife, he says, "She was always there and always been a good sounding board for me. All the music's been bounced off Jane. And she's always been very supportive of the group. I didn't really have a lot of time at home for many years, yet she was still very supportive."

I understand some of this song but I need help with the rest. I can't believe only one other person has commented on this song. It's my favorite Tom Petty song, too.

Still I think of her when the sun goes down It never goes away, but it all works out

I have an idea but no real detailed thoughts on this line? Does it mean his thoughts of her never go away and she will never really be gone?

Even Heartbreakers get their hearts broken!

I think that's exactly it... they are no longer toguether, still she is always present, always in his mind, and in a way i will never understand, it works out for him...maybe resignation of having her gone with someone good to her even though he still loves her. This song kills me...!

Okay, this is what i think:

A guy and a girl were dating ( obviously ), and he did some thing wrong, maybe cheated on her...? so, they broke up. She immedietly started dating some one else, and she is happy with him. Years later...he still thinks about her, ALL THE TIME. But, to make himself feel better, He thinks to himself: " i hurt her, he's better then me, IT'LL ALL WORK OUT. "

I don't know. Something liek that I guess. This song is so peaceful. One of my favorites deffinetly.
