I totally agree with the comments, you nailed it.. it's all about who did the choosing and who had the upper hand.. even though there is an obvious nod to the fact that it's really all subjective and more than likely the narrator was not the one in control. This is wonderfully borne out by the tremendously creative video in how it manages to find a creative complement, almost a counter point, to the song. The band members are playing rolls, kind of crusty traveler types, but it's in the future. And we know they are who they are, the rock star guys, too.. there's a little tongue in cheek to it.. but what relates to the song so nicely as the kind of further extension on the theme of the song, is how the seem to be wandering around aimlessly in some kind of semi-purposeful obscelence.. the setting is that of one of, what do you call it? A post-world? I forgot but you probably know what I mean.

False bravado. He doesn't say, "you got lucky when you found me", he says, "ypu got lucky when I found you", and sings it with a little catch in his voice. He was the lucky one, but his pride won't let him come out and say it.

It's about a girl that wants to brek up the relationship but he's saying you're never gonna find anyone as good as me.

I take it to mean that his woman is breaking up with him, and he's saying, "Screw you. I'm better than you could ever hope to deserve." Then again, I have a pretty dim view of this whole romance thing, so maybe I got it wrong. On a different note, does anyone get why that made THAT video for THIS song? Both are good, but they don't seem to be related at all.

This is my song! I love it. How can you say anything better than this? To tell someone that if they believe that you're not good enough for them than leave, but you better think twice about it because they're losing something good.

this is one of my favorite tp songs i thought there'd be more comments. i agree that the girl is trying to break up with him and he's telling her to go but then saying "BUT, remember good love is hard to find" and so he's telling her to go but i'm not sure that he means it. he really wants her to know that she got lucky and that she won't find anything like him again. i looooveeee the video. it has nothing to do with the songs but it's awesome!

My wife recently kicked me out. On my way out the door I quoted her a line from this song. I hope every time she hears it she remembers not only me, but what I said.

Probably unintended, but this song is the quintessential guide map for how a man should manage his relationship(s) with women. The elements associated with a woman's hypergamy are on display here, but more importantly, the correct yet uncomfortable way that a man should deal with these realities is laid bare. I say uncomfortable because nearly all men want to "keep" that special person who is dear to him. He will sacrifice many things in his life, including his dignity, to save what cannot be saved. It is one of the most pathetic things that men do. "If you don't feel complete. If I can't take you all of the way, then go..." means that, the moment HE realizes that he is no longer her priority, then the relationship is over...regardless of whether she is able to muster the courage to communicate it. In short, Petty is saying, "Don't waste my life."
