So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Well, I'm trying to be patient
Yeah, the wheels keep turning around
But it's a treadmill and I'm just dragging my feet
I'm so tired of everything, defeated by routine
By words that don't mean anything to me
At least not anymore
Now that I'm done with the morning
Of a day without ending
A year of decadence to escape from penance
But I suffered, and I'm over it
Yeah, I'm fine now, but I'm sick of it
I was happy being miserable
I used to lay down my head on the bar
And raise one lonely finger for a drink
It doesn't have to be so difficult
Just keep coasting by
So you lost a limb
Well hell, these wounds will heal with time
(But what happens when you loved what you lost?)
You didn't have to cut it off
But I did and I do and it took everything I had
I wonder if I could ever get it back to how it was
When I still thought of love as a risk I could take
If I was willing to make the commitment to rejection
The mind games, the deception
The late nights under the covers
Pointing the finger at whoever started
Whatever we were fighting about
I guess that I'm fine now
Yeah, everything's better
Everything's cooled down
It's all copasetic
We'll move on, off to a better world
To a fresh start where anything's possible
But I'm sick of it
Yeah, I'm sick of it
I am so sick of it
Uh-huh
Yeah, the wheels keep turning around
But it's a treadmill and I'm just dragging my feet
I'm so tired of everything, defeated by routine
By words that don't mean anything to me
At least not anymore

well, we already settled it on the SCWB no hard feelings.
when I think mind blowing I think shane macgowan, elliott smith, ryan adams, conor oberst. the rest is just very good, or good or ok to me. but mindblowing for me means these 4 people. I can't explain why. well I can explain why, but these are things I see. and there are things I learned after. The first time I've heard them I was blown away. and I still am. and I will always be.
it's really good and mature from your part to say you were too harsh. You were. I think that talking about Conor is not irrelevant, I wouldn't have any problem talking about Tim in a Conor thread. it makes very much sense, seeing that they're friends and get inspired by each other a lot. and after all I'm not the one obsessed with Conor who thinks that every single song written is about him! :P
but as I said we already talked on the SCWB. so it's fine no problem.
