Now days cats and middleman, little man, ain't controlling shit (uh)
Talking 'bout holding bricks but ain't holding dick
Niggas talk real slick but that's about it
Soon as I see 'em headed my way, I cut 'em off quick (what?)
Must you beat me in my head every time I come through?
With shit like, "Everybody tells me I sound just like you" (damn)
But you not me, got me? And you can't live without me (uh-uh)
If I wasn't DMX, you wouldn't give a fuck about me (uh, uh what?)

And it take you where it's gon' take you, it'll be fine

Truly you'll see how real you'll be (uh, uh, uh)

Do you 'cause what it boils down to is true
Do you 'cause you are held accountable for you
Do you, is that really what you want me to see?
Do you 'cause I'ma do me, truly (oowee)

Do you 'cause what it boils down to, it's true
Do you 'cause you are held accountable for you
Do you, is that really what you want me to see?
Do you 'cause I'ma do me, truly (oowee)

Ayo dawg, I got lyrics (uh-huh)
Ayo dawg, I got beats (word?)
Damn, is this the type of shit I gots to put up with in the streets?
Used to be able to walk, not have to talk to nobody (uh-huh)
Everywhere I go it's like I bring the whole party (damn)
It ain't about tryin' to follow or tryin' to be liked
But if we all see it through the eyes of the Lord, we see a light (c'mon)
Just let me get a hold of the mic and I'll teach you a little something (uh)
Lotta good things could go wrong because of a little frontin' (what?)
Express yourselves, be who you are
Mh-mh-mh, you're a shining star
You don't even know what you got inside
How the fuck you gon' find out? You keep wanting to ride (aight?)
Ayo, I ain't gon' let it slide no more, you're best to go for (uh)
What you know can't do you? Then what you flow for? (Uh)

Do you 'cause what it boils down to is true (uh)
Do you 'cause you are held accountable for you
Do you, is that really what you want me to see?
Do you 'cause I'ma do me, truly (oowee)

Do you 'cause what it boils down to, it's true
Do you 'cause you are held accountable for you (uh)
Do you, is that really what you want me to see?
Do you 'cause I'ma do me, truly (oowee)

Grow up neglected by both parents and still pull through (damn)
You gots to come up fucked up, get treated like shit (okay)
Then have your mother's new boyfriend smack you like a bitch (woo)
Turn into a killer but don't carry your shotty
'Cause the way it's goin' down right now, you gonna kill somebody (what?)
Get a dawg, walk the streets, learn what you need to learn (uh)
It don't have a cause but because you'll get burned (c'mon)
Rap for fifteen years without ever coming out
And be convinced that the world don't know what they talkin' about (aight)
Then get locked up every two years, for two years (uh, uh)
Keep it real, hold back all tears, face your fears (uh)
Become a man before your time, rap but live out your rhymes (uh-huh)
Let 'em know what's on your mind, then you'll get your shine (what?)
Due time, everything you dreamed will come true
But you won't be doin' me (What?), You'll be doin' you

Do you 'cause what it boils down to is true
Do you 'cause you are held accountable for you
Do you, is that really what you want me to see?
Do you 'cause I'ma do me, truly (oowee)

Do you 'cause what it boils down to, it's true
Do you 'cause you are held accountable for you

No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
