this song could be about trying to keep a secret, and feeling it weighing on your conscience.

It seems that in the song they have to keep a secrect about something they have seen because telling the truth would involve betraying someone close to them.

actually, now i think this song is specifically about trying to keep a secret from the police. The police are riding him hard and hes a suspect in a major crime. Possibly a crime of passion and he wants some space from the police. eventually in the last verse it seems that the cops try beat a confession out of him while he is handcuffed. "My hands at my back, pushing violent acts The truth an artifact" "Kicking out this make believe"

so they beat him untill he confesses a false version of events. Or something like that.
