I agree somewhat with shockdelica's interpretation, but not fully. To me it's always seemed like this is a breakup song... This explains why he can't seem to figure out what to do with himself. Feeling lonely, but not feeling like doing anything about it. Just sitting around staring into the night. The "Something about you / Something about spending the afternoon / Asleep in your arms"-bit seems like a memory, and the closing lines are like his way of convincing himself that instead of missing this someone desperately, he tries to get angry instead, you know, "trying to vent this terrible passion"... But in reality, he doesn't hate this particular someone, no matter how hard he tries.

And, to me, the song seems to be about E feeling lonely, even though he's considered a popular guy - a rock star, at this point. Even around all these people, he feels sad and alone - and is thinking of one person in particular.
The end could be him feeling bitter towards that person, for not being with him - or him talking to himself, hating himself for feeling this way.
For me, this song was always about what I wanted to happen, and how terrible I was at trying to get to the situation. The asleep in your arms was what I wanted- what I got was a lost friend, depression, and painful memories. So I hated me.
