Back in the Day

From reading the artists few chats about the song but still leaving enough unsaid to let the listener put their own feel on it is a wonderful gift Dylan gave us with this one.

To me this song is about growing up, you get in your 20s or early 30s and everything you though was real turns out to be bullshit. Your friends weren't really your friends, the beliefs your parents taught you aren't all correct, you find our that hippies only hate capitalism when they aren't selling you something, that both political parties are f*k'd, that rich people...

I'm not really sure how these scenarios would play out. An evil villain kidnaps Bruno's GF and tells him to step in front of a train or he's going to kill his sweetie... It's really no wonder why she wouldn't do the same, because she's not crazy. That's a good sign.

"When you believe, you will relieve the only soul that you were born with to grow old and never know." I am taking that to mean, that by believing -- anything, anything at all -- you relieve your soul, the only one that you were born with, from the duty to know. It can just "grow old and never know". It's OK. Don't sweat it, soul.

For years I played a little music-video in my mind when hearing this song. It focused on a group of young hopefuls arriving in Hollywood, their eyes full of stars and dreams. And how it turned out for them. Most of them failed, but a few made it...at a price. At the end, during the 'women are lovely...' part we see the next batch of kids walking toward the Hollywood hills with the same hopeful faces, as they're mobbed by agents, lawyers, and managers waving contracts and cash in their faces, hoping they don't notice their predecessors laying wasted on...

I don't think this song is about clothes per say, that is what usually springs to mind when Fashion is mentioned. I think it is about herd mentality, and the song is drenched in sarcasm, or irony. I like the line 'listen to me, don't listen to me, talk to me, don't talk to me, dance with me, don't dance with me, no.' BEEP BEEP.

I also really like the opening of this song, with the pulse count in and the guitar.
