John Prine – Sam Stone Lyrics 6 years ago
I never thought of the balloon line as a reference to how the drugs were sold. I see it more as a metaphor for the way someone's body eventually dies when you push the limit on how much heroin you can fit in your bloodstream before reaching an overdose, similar to how a balloon eventually pops when you try to get as much air in it as possible without popping it. When you keep testing these limits, eventually you're gonna overestimate and pop your balloon.

Bob Dylan – Don't Think Twice, It's All Right Lyrics 6 years ago
@[AFewThoughts:23399] Great thoughts! I agree in pronunciation it is all right not alright. both songs. good catch.
I think the best part of the lyrics of this song is But goodbye’s too good a word, gal
So I’ll just say fare thee well
I ain’t sayin’ you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don’t mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don’t think twice, it’s all right

Fantastic song and I agree with the comments.
I cant relate and found the words full of truth. A way of saying goodbye to a woman who cant commit. Dylan shows his cool style with those lines.. "Don't think twice its alright."

Awolnation – Kill Your Heroes Lyrics 6 years ago
@[splainer:23366] I would agree with everything you said but add something:
as children we are "shoehorned" into these roles that society and our parents push upon us. I think the reasons why they bleep out the occupations is that he doesn't want to make anyone feel bad for whatever role they choose. BECAUSE it's OK to be whatever you want to be so long as YOU want to do that. AND you might choose a shitty role, but at least if YOU chose that role,.....you can accept responsibility for choosing that role and deal with the consequences. IF SOMEONE ELSE chose that role for you then you will always be off-kilter because of that.

Chevelle – Point #1 Lyrics 6 years ago
@[othello3713:23359] I think you are onto something here that it has to do with Faith (likely Christianity). @[jess101544:23360] that they were signed by a Christian label at the time backs it up.

I cannot interpret the whole song, but I think I have something relevant worth sharing:
"What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?" - Mark 8:36

When he says, "It seems I've gained the world but have nothing," I think he could possibly be referencing the above verse, which means "nothing" is referring to forfeiture of his soul.

Carrying it further, this could mean "Rebuke, don't choke on this twisted dream" is referring from a departure from the faith, as you mentioned, into the mainstream. The fame they achieved without sticking to their Christian roots is the "twisted dream".

my 2c.

Death Cab for Cutie – What Sarah Said Lyrics 6 years ago
I think the song is about partying; the way he highlights the hospital as a place where people all meet for very shortly and then say goodbye says to me that the song is about parties and convivial events where bonds aren't made very strong. Then he goes on to explain that love is watching someone die, so I feel it's definitely about a party, where at a hospital, even you can have your closest friends love you and share some intimacy in a place where people are just bracing for bad news.

Tom Petty – Honey Bee Lyrics 6 years ago
@[HibbingismyHolyLand:23348] I think she's jail bait (juju bees are candies for kids), a Rambler is an older car that a kid would probably drive being we could never afford much (I drove a Chevy Belair-1950's when I was 17 in 1973). Short pants I think refers to how she makes him feel, very young. Don't tell your Ma? Where's Pa? Not much parental guidance, maybe she and her sister raised by a single Mom? She has a boyfriend? Kids have boy friends. I'm convinced he was with a much young woman, probably met after a concert. That's my story and I'm stickin to it. Definitely creepy.

Rise Against – Savior Lyrics 6 years ago
@[HunterL:23344] I came here looking to see if this song was related to mother nature, since I know many Rise Against songs are. There part where you explained mother nature repeating "I don't hate you" as she is dying, made me cry. Before actively spreading awareness about climate, nature and animals, I always thought this repeating in the end meant emphasizing the terrible thing of a girl telling a guy she doesn't hate him, as if pitying him, instead of saying she loves him. It could be both.

Demi Lovato – Two Pieces Lyrics 6 years ago
First of all, Demi didn't write or co-write this song. Second this fact isn't true. Trenton and Demi were childhood friends and Trenton's death wasn't the reason she started cutting. If you know nothing about it, then please don't talk about it at all.

@[SongMeaningsUK:23273] You're really pathetic to think it's NOT, to think that sex is dirty. Sex is natural, it's life, it's how you and I came to be.
Religions make people hate themselves. That's dirty. And that makes me do sick things, like rape and murder.

Gorillaz – Clint Eastwood Lyrics 6 years ago
@[damien1076:23269] Yeah, just like how the song title is an eye-catching name drop, :sunshine in a bag; is such a specific and strange phrase to use that he was undeniably making a reference to drugs. Of course he'd deny it, doesn't change reality. Yeah many fans will willfully ignore that face, but also, the rest of the song had so many different and random phrases and vague implications to the point where nobody can Objectively say or understand the lyrics.
Really, for shame on Gorrillaz. This song is basically just click-bait. They tossed in lots of popular words and vague phrases to that Seem to be deep, but are just random bullcrap strewn together into a mess of a song that's literally about nothing. They made a popup ad instead of a song.....kinda really sad and petty.

Gorillaz – Clint Eastwood Lyrics 6 years ago
@[Royaltramp:23268] @[Royaltramp:23268] Wow, very in depth explanation. I still don't think it has so much drug related lyrics (nearly the whole song), but you may be right, especially since the the first lyrics (sunshine in a bag) which are almost certainly about drugs, Keeps being repeated over and over the whole time. The repetition may even be there to show what the focus of the song is.

The flip-side is that the Ghost's rap seems to be more about social issues and how people perceive things, which is not reliant on drugs. He talks about how people don't always think or question things. He talks about music culture. The idea that famous rappers are successful because "you either have rythm or you don't.That's a fallacy."
The lyrics "Spiritual hero who appears in you to clear your view when you're too crazy." sound like how people turn to music and look up to their bands for support when they are Feeling crazy, stressed, etc.
But the ghost mock this, saying how all it takes it one toke (one song, just playing music) and then he's able to possess them. -Basically, people often become mindlessly in love with bands and artists and will support and praise them too much because of how much the music affected them.
The power of music also goes back to the lyrics talking about a power being spiritual, or mythical, which is how some music can make people feel. And the band seems to those people as a "spiritual hero", regardless of the actual ethics or actions of the musicians.
"Y'all can see me now 'cause you don't see with your eye.
You perceive with your mind." This being said by a giant ghost rapping I think says how people don't see reality, but instead just create these huge, overblown ideas of what musicians are.

"Bust a few rhymes so motherfuckers remember
Where the thought is.
I brought all this So you can survive when law is lawless.
Feelings, sensations that you thought was dead.
No squealing, remember that it's all in your head."
To me, this seems like an egotistical statement, like "remember it was ME who's music gave you happiness". Maybe a statement on how some bands treat their fans, or some fans feel.

And in the end, the main verse could actually just be about music. Music can make people happy and motivate them. (although sunshine in a bag is a weird metaphor for an ipod...)

Your interpretation is very good though, and I think drugs has some part to the song.

The Cure – The Caterpillar Lyrics 6 years ago
And filling up my hopeless heart
Oh never never go
Dust my lemon lies
With powder pink and sweet
The day I stop
Is the day you change
And fly away from me

You flicker
And you're beautiful
You glow inside my head
You hold me hypnotized
I'm mesmerized
Your flames
The flames that kiss me dead

First impression: A song that seems wistful and fun on the surface is really about how romance can change a person for better or worse. His "lemon lies" are his bitter attitude toward life that she sugarcoats with "powder pink and sweet" He doesn't want her to stop as he thinks it's a balancing formula that keeps it together. And he can't stop either (The day I stop is the day...) It would change the equation. And yet, for all the beauty she provides, there are flames, too, that "kiss me dead," which is irony -- something that's feels so good can also kill you. Which also makes me think the song could be about drugs that tame his bitter side by making life look sweeter but could be deadly.

Silversun Pickups – Friendly Fires Lyrics 6 years ago
My take on this song is that he's talking about what it's like to be young (or young adult) living in this techno-centric culture.

"Oh, the things we see
Through connected wires
Are the people that flee
From friendly fire"

The internet, and being able to escape the pain and discomfort of your real life, and connect to online communities where you can commune with others feel at home.

"When they separate me
Into being stored
With all the recessed genes
That are left ignored"

Being marginalized because you don't fit an expected norm of society.

"Getting naked all the time
Why dodge the friendly fire?"

Opening yourself and just letting it all out, which can cause "friendly fire" when you clash with others ideals and/or misunderstanding with the people physically around you. Also, an attitude of "who cares if i lose people in real life, I can escape online and find people who understand me."

"So who could ever break you down?
And what could ever freak you out?
If you can carry this around
Then you will never break down"

With enough curiosity on the internet (smart phone) we become jaded, and it takes excessive disturbance to really get to us.

The rest of the song is pointing out how those that are referred to (by some) as normies. Us poorfolk trying to scrape by and not have a rich man's paycheck, we still try to live a life of fun and excess as though everything is ok.

Iron & Wine – Innocent Bones Lyrics 6 years ago
Cain did this; Able did that:
These are examples of two kinds of spiritual practice.
Cain’s practice is pragmatic, practical, and wrathful
Able’s practice is more social and laid-back

The babies:
Are a symbol of pure innocence and divine wisdom
Their eye color symbolizes the progression from least to most spiritual knowledge from the lightest color (blue) to the darkest (black)

The blue-eyed babies know
We are all mortal, and will eventually die
Even when a sinner is punished he/she will want to sin again anyway

The brown-eyed babies see
Even characters of righteous authority aren’t perfect and have something to hide.
Religious people all want divine wisdom / enlightenment, but few are willing to make the sacrifices to attain it.
Most of us don’t love each other so we substitute real love (which requires sacrifice) with an idea of love.
You can’t get rid of desires by pursuing and fulfilling them.

The black-eyed babies say
To truly be a good person you must help everyone you can
Helping and serving others is difficult, thankless work
It’s the sacrifices of the innocent which create and preserve our progress toward creating paradise / being saved / enlightenment
It was always the sacrifice of the innocent we depended on to progress
If Christ returned he would see the Human race gambling with their fate
Nothing is truly free, everything you are and everything you get needs to go back or be repaid eventually.

this song is one of my favorites. i know what direction the lyrcis are heading in. and i can definitely relate to them. it's all about moving on and wanting not to look back at the passed relationship. great song! by the way, the punk scene will never die. punk is meant to be an underground music. a clash of ideas from what "pop" culture is. if there are teenagers, there will be punk music.
