| I'm reading "The Plague" by Camus right now, and I happened upon this song, and I'm interpreting it with a social context of being a child during a plague outbreak. I'm probably reaching on that one though. Thoughts? | |

| This song is about how when we act like we're on top of the world, we're really just insanely confused and don't know where the hell we're going. | |

Lessee... I'd say it's about a stuck-up, superficial chick who is in love with life in the excess, and the guy's in love with her and he can't ever REALLY get her because she's so shallow. Storytellers said this was about how John went to LA and everybody who lived there were shallow people who seemed to be in love with themselves, but they're really just hiding behind the security blanket of superficiality, and deep (deep deep deep DEEP) down, they're really just normal, insecure people. |

"beautiful and so untouchable" is probably saying how the girl feels like she has isolated herself and how she feels it's impossible for anyone to break through all her layers and get to know her. This song is about a girl that's so far gone inside herself that there's no getting her out of her hell. |

| I really think this song is John's life story told in third-person, as are a lot of his songs... | |

I think it's about one of those informal "make-out-buddy" relationships that isn't official, yet isn't nothing. Basically a relationship where you know you're not getting anything out of it and you "want to get free", but you hang on for the ride a bit longer than you should've. "I know it's out there.." ends the song on a hopeful note... it's pretty much saying that he knows his person is out there, but it's not the person he's with at the moment. |

This is one of my favorite goo goo dolls songs... it's so simple... Basically it talks about a guy likin' a girl and being really shy and insecure about it, and he just wants to know where he stands with her. I like the part about sneaking in the back window... I did that once! |

John Rzeznik has said this song is his "Catholic school teenage sex-anthem" (or something along those lines). Catholic girl finds a guy, fall in love, he gets her pregnant, she is thinking about aborting the baby... the Catholic church abolishes her, her parents are pissed... but the guy loves her and gives her a choice: "do you want to get married" (please the parents, do it the traditional way and stay out of trouble) "or run away" (who gives a flying fizuck what they think? let's get the hell out of here and live our life together, we don't need them! *that'd be my choice*). Yep. |

| The Goo Goo Dolls – Sympathy Lyrics | 23 years ago |

I think "stranger than your sympathy" means that he's surprised that the person feels sympathy for his situation despite all the things he's done wrong. The second & third verses I think have many references to being famous and the life that comes along with it... "It's hard to lead the life you choose" would be him saying that the perfect life isn't always the easiest one. "You can't see when all your dreams are coming true" would be him neglecting important things (i.e. family, WIFE!!!) because he was blind to them when the rockstar dream came true. "It's easy to forget" is everything on the road, maybe groupies, drugs, ect. really doesn't mean anything after the tour is over and it's easily forgettable. "and you choke on the regrets" meaning that he's done so many crazy things on the road that seemed like good ideas at the time, but now he regrets it all. I think the whole third verse is where he comes home from the tour and thinks, "where is home? i'm a rock star, i'm famous, people love me" but he can't find a place to belong... and maybe he's realizing that everything he'd come to believe about himself on the road was really a big balloon filled with false pride. Yeeah that's about as deep as i get. |
