In my opinion, this song speaks from perspective of someone who just left world too soon and now feels sorry for those he left behind. For easier writing, I'll refer to person who left as John and person to whom John is speaking as Ann.
"Watching the wings cut through the clouds
Watching the raindrops blinking red and white
Thinking of you back on the ground"
John speaks from perspective of an angel, watching from above on Ann (or his loved ones).
"That willful fire burning in your eyes
I only halfway apologize"
Ann feels anger and sorrow, and John feels slight regret, because he couldn't see other way.
And I'll be sorry for now
That I couldn't be around
Sometimes things refuse
To go the way we planned
Oh I'll be sorry for now
That I couldn't be around
There will be a day
That you will understand
You will understand"
John feels sorry he left, he knows that's not the way they planned,
but he hopes that one day Ann might understand.
"After a while you may forget
But just in case the memories cross your mind
You couldn't know this when I left
Under the fire of your angry eyes
I never wanted to say goodbye"
He explains to her that she couldn't have known he would do it, nor that he planned it. He never wanted to say goodbye, as in, it was all of a sudden.
"Yeah, stop telling 'em to pump the bass up
Tried to call home but nobody could wait up
Switch your time zones can't pick the pace up
I just passed out by the time you wake up"
I believe this wants to say he is transcedent, he is above physical world.
He can't reach them because bass is too loud and phone is unreachable,
He has different time, can't follow them.
"Best things come to those who wait
And it's bound to get rough on any road you take
But don't you ever have a doubt and make no mistake
I can't wait to come back when I'm going away"
He is cheering for them and tells he can't wait to meet them again.
Last line in chorus is repeated 3x times, possibly to represent how John is fading away and going to new place. |

Well, I have read many interpretations, I can't say, any of them are wrong, or mistaken (that gives the real beauty in poetry), but there is something I'd like to bring into the picture: tejasdatta brought Buddha into his interpretation. It is a possibility I can not deny, But Dio was not only into ancient history, but much more into modern fantasy and sci-fi (he himself stated this in an interview with Sam Dunn in 2010). Well, If we take this into consideration, the song itself is a perfect match for Asimov's Foundation (Released '51-'53). So after the handling of the dry facts of possibilities, Let there come my personal interpretations (Sorry if I'm lenghtly, but I'll try to write things, so even those can understand, who know nothing of the books I mentioned.)
The strong young men of the Rising Sun: All of the main characters are people in their youth (20-30) who are ultimately skilled and revolutionary in their ways. And how come the Rising Sun? The Foundation, their home is an organization of free thinkers and scientists, who wish to educate and illuminate a galaxy thrown back into forgetting and darkness.
The temple:There is the Vault, in the home planet. The Vault opens up only on special prophecised occasions(in the year of the Fox), to show the image of a scientist, (the old man sings) who struggled through his entire life to save the galaxy from the chaos and oblivion coming (Heaven, help me!). The image then told about what shall be done, to avoid it (the answer had been found).
I'm sure, if you really want to understand it, you can go further yourselves by reading at least the first book: The Foundation (ISBN 0-553-29335-4). It is about one or two hundred pages.

Ok, sorry to continue this arguement but it just happens to hit my pet peeves, so I'm gonna havta. For you people saying she is punk...you have not heard real punk then & prolly are just happy to be getting a break from NSync, britney, christina, etc. I'm not trying to act punk, I listen to all different types of music, but mostly punk or emo etc etc, & I'll admit I don't know that much about it, but at least I know when something is NOT punk. Yes, she may dress punk, but who cares?? Honestly, how you dress does not havta match your music, & it definitely does not define your music. Other than "All I'm Losing Is Me," I think this song has got the best lyrics!! I can relate to every single part of it in some way, it's so incredibly good. They didn't play it when I saw them in concert though :(, but were still amazing! |

Ok, this whole arguement will of course never get resolved cause you have 20 million different points of views from people. as for my opinion, which no one cares about but i will state it anyway, i dont have a problem with so called "teenyboppers" liking this, cause hey they CAN like whatever they want (just admit it guys, you can't sotp them) and at least they'll admit to being teenyboppers. but i dont like the people who hear this song and suddenly say how they love jimmy eat world sooooo much when i bet they couldnt name ONE other song by them for their life! its fine to love a song, just don't pretend you know so damn much when u dont know anything! even tho i listen to a lot of this type of music (punk, emo, whatever) ill admit anyday i dont know that much about the bands cause i dont feel i havta be a stalker and find out everything about them. just my opinion...oh and to other previous comments, everyone stereotypes at one point or another, get over it. sorry. |

I love listening to this song. When my friend and I were going through a lot of problems he sent me the lyrics to it & said he thought I might like it.
