i havent heard that the lyrics were inspired by ishmael, but it wouldnt surprise me...i've read it and it is a great book...it reminds you that humans are animals, and it points out where we screwed up pretty much...very interesting..maybe a little left wing..but thought provoking all the same..i would like to know where the 2010 prediction comes from though...im sure its not random.. |

most collections in art are in three's,as in a trinity, or trilogy like the mamasan trilogy (alive,once,footsteps).. i believe this song is the third part in the daughter/rearviewmirror sequence.. in the albumn sleeve of binaural , with the lyrics to parting ways is a bleeding violin.. tying in with the violins from daughter... daughter is about being abused, rearview mirror is about escaping the abuse..and parting ways is about the girl, grown up...she is unable to form, or at least keep,..an intimate relationship because of the abuse she endured as a child,(thus creating curtains to hide the flames, like creating a wall)...in "touring band 2000" eddie says the song is "about a lot of things"..i think the other thing this song ties into is his relationship with beth..i dont know the specifics there, but i'm pretty sure they divorced..or parted ways..around the time the song was written....this truly is an amazing song... |

i think matzy said it best, about the whole letter thing. For a while i thought he said "i don't know whether it was a box or a bag"..which i saw as 'he didnt know how they brought the body back over to the states'. But now i think the "boxer or the bag" makes sense, cuz its like, in any war..are you the victim or the aggressor? if you think this song means nothing, your ignorant because mr. vedder and pearl jam wouldnt attach their names to anything that is empty of meaning or thought. |

I believe, this song is very autobiographical. I think eddie was becoming upset and very sick of the celebrity thing when he wrote this. I think the song is aimed at critics and people who rape music of its art. It's like saying "this song is not for you, fuck you"...this is one of my favorite pj songs |

many people compare this song to a relationship (my best friend for example)... but i think the temporaryism is directed at phases in music....incubus is one of the only good bands out there right now..though they have a dj, i separate them from shitty rap/rock groups today...i'm sure just like all of us, incubus is sick of the empty pop culuture that has taken over (m)tv...and i think brandon may be hoping that good music will make a return ...the whole black plague/jesus thing-the fact that we want a new brittney spears every second is a black plague upon our satisfaction.. and people worship celebritys as if they were messiahs..ok,ill stop...sorry this was long and "opinionated".. |
