i agree with Maxpower for the most part. It seems that Layne had this girl he really cared for but something deep inside of him held him back from fully loving her/caring for her. The line "caught in ice so she stares, stares at nothing, I could help her but won't, now she hates me" shows how enigmatic he was. The song is very powerful, as is the music itself, which is very strange but extraordinarily well-written and is one of my personal favorites. |

In my opinion this is Staley's most beautifully written lyric. I don't think he's alone in a sense of being by himself - he may very well be surrounded by other people - but he feels alone because he doesn't feel anything on the inside, it's all from the outside, crawling up to his skin. Only hate gets inside and fills him up to make him feel. So if he doesn't emotionally feel anything from the inside, he is not even inside of himself - he doesn't even have himself as a companion anymore, hence the title and the line, "missing better half of me". |

this is my most favorite AIC song. i love the overlapping guitars, the echoes of the acoustics and the squeal of the electrics, all tied in by this vocal mantra. i think staley is writing first about original sin, but in a big picture sense, so that we are given a picture of the entire world composed of many smaller images of the world and how it is cold and ignorant and a mess. the apple is back to the bible - the people are corrupted at such young ages now, so that they can never get back to that place of innocence ever again, and staley wants it, but it's too late for him. freakin' apples. |

people should remember, however, that when it comes to listening to and reading songs, you should trust the tale and not always the teller. down in a hole sounds very much like a herion-induced nightmare, not a love song, so whichever interpretation causes someone to love the song is in a sense the correct one.
this is my second most favorite AIC song; i get a great catharthis at the last chorus. |
