Do you think this could possibly mean that Freddie wanted to know "Is there a God?". SHOW YOUR FACE, DESTROY OUR FEARS, RELEASE YOUR MASK! Is that a cry by Freddie knowing he's facing death and questioning the uncertainty of the afterlife? I love the song musically. Lyrically I've never really studied it until now but that's what I'm getting out of it. |

I'm back...I've got some more insight on the song. I'm guessing it could be about someone in the process of dying. She sees the "light" at the end of the tunnel and it's a "cruel" torch to Billy because he doesn't want to see her go. The "crashing nightingale" is a nurse rushing Sheila through the er...as her systems begin to fail her she sees "vapor trails" of the sights around her, until it's time for her to "arrive" to death. The last verse about the summer storm is Billy coming to grips with the death and shows how he copes and still experiences Sheila. yup...I'm probably way off. |

From what i heard from a Billy interview was "Try, Try, Try" talks about when you try to hang on to something whether it's love or what not...you end up losing it. Then he goes on to say when you try to forget something...you can't.

Ok...after further investigation this is the way I see this song. Someone doesn't feel that anyone should ever be in love. Billy is singing the part of someone else saying "WHAT?! ARE YOU KIDDING? WHO WOULDN'T WANT TO LOVE YOU? WHO WOULDN'T 'STAND INSIDE YOUR LOVE'?
So I standby my original theory that it is indeed a love song and the woman or love interest has doubts about herself and Billy's just reassuring her that he's so happily in love with her. His love is real and passionate and he'd do ANYTHING for her. He couldn't imagine NOT being in love with her nor could he imagine anyone not wanting to be in his shoes and loving her. |

Not to cheapen the song, but if you take the American Pie movies this song seems to be the perfect soundtrack for the Tara Reid character and her boyfriend. They were "perfect" together in their youth...they've since grown apart...but they are always that special someone to each other. Now they have moved on while cherishing their time together.

After furth analyzation...I conclude that yes indeed this was Billy's feelings about himself, James Iha, D'arcy, and Jimmy Chamberlain.

they are free from the Pumpkins. They were too young to die to end it. They made a crap load of money from the Pumpkins, so they may not be sad or care too too much that it's over. And the ride was so unbelievable, Billy insists it was an illusion. I think those lines right there summarize Billy's final feelings on the Smashing Pumpkins.

I've only heard a live version of this song and i loved it. Guess there are only LIVE versions of it right now. Either way, after reading the lyrics...to me it sounds like Billy's ready to give up Jesus, and perhaps all organized religion to follow himself...his beliefs...what he believes in. Makes sense. You can have faith...maybe you shouldn't put it in an organization like the Church. Keep the faith...in yourself. |

This song is so depressing and bittersweet at the same time. From what I understand Elton John wrote this to describe a young gay man dying of AIDS. The young man's father "disowned" his son when he learned of his homosexuality only to overcome his homophobia when learns that his son is dying and he has little time to spend with him.
Ultimately it gives both perspectives of the story in a sense. The son, like many of the world's youth, thought he was invincible. "AIDS won't happen to me"...just like many young adults/kids believe STDs, car accidents, tragedies can't happen to them...thus "I never thought I'd lose, I only thought I'd win". It also tells of a father who must overcome his disapproval of his son's lifestlye to ultimately love his son. It's like what Billy Corgan says in "This Time" ----"Only Love will win".
This song is tragic in that the death of this person is ultimately inevitable and is much too early in life. It's bittersweet in that it took an extreme taxing of the mind and body of a son and his father by this disease for a father to realize he has nothing to be ashamed of concerning his son, and that the only thing that matters is that he still loves the child he brought into the world. |

mary mother of a god...that song is beautiful. That hit me hard...especially the "someday we'll wave hello, and wish we'd never wave good bye"...sounds like a breakup that happened for the wrong reasons type of song. Perhaps Billy was referring to those unique situations when people breakup not because they don't love each other but because circumstances make things difficult. The song is just gorgeous though...and as i really read the lyrics for the first time it touched home. Reality bites...just like the movie says. |

Did not know that cft19...I know the Innuendo album credits "Queen" as writing all the songs out of respect for the band. Do you know any other specific songs that were written by the others on Innuendo?
BTW, this song rules. I believe Freddie knew it'd be his "farewell" song, especially during the video shoot. He's an amazing figure in the music industry. I was so happy to see Queen make it to the R'N'R Hall of Fame. Well deserved. |

Hey Tao...I see your point. I still stick with my guns on the Cobain issue. "Teen Machines" represent the hordes of kids Cobain had looking up to him after "Teen Spirit". He got lost inside their dreams...had trouble dealing with it all. Ashame. I remember when Nirvana and the Pumpkins were supposed to be on the Lollapolooza tour together in '94. That would have rocked. Pumpkins picked up the slack though...it was a muddy mess in Philly but worth the dirt!!! |

Billy has left a big impression in the music history books. I forget where I heard Billy say this...it was on a talk show I think, possibly Howard Stern Show...but he said this is one of the few pure love songs by the Smashing Pumpkins. I don't see any negative connotations in this song. It's purely a guy pouring his heart and sould out about the one he loves. |

I see this song in similar light...however, I think Billy portrays someone with low self esteem and therefore feels he's let his opportunity with a girl go. He may have treated her like a saint but the girl didn't appreciate it...so Billy ends up thinking he's not good enough. Who is he to think he's "good enough" for her? Now he's asking for a second chance. I'd love to ask Billy who the song was for, what it's exact intent was, and what result(s) occurred. |

I think it's about Billy just trying to let go the death of a loved one. He explains that it's been tough but he can't "keep diggin' roses from your grave". He must move on. I love the "Adore" album...unfortunately Billy was ripped a new A-hole for this album because it wasn't as commercial as Dream & Collie were. I personally think this is the Pumpkins best album. |

Sounds like Billy's referring to someone who keeps going back to a lover who he knows will break his heart again and again. ("I'll betray myself"). The man can't help it...it's a vicious cycle for him. He can't stand being without her love...wants nothing less ("didn't want to be your friend"). It's another example of Billy's genius. |
