this song rather makes me think of the fact that kele is gay. i think this song is about him being really good friends with a girl, and wanting to be attracted to her and to be with her, but he just can't make it work. kind of the like the plot of 'edge of seventeen'. or perhaps that he could handle pretending when it was a "casual, easy thing" but when things become more serious and they discuss their future he realises he can't pretend to be straight anymore. although the explanation of getting a girl pregnant is perhaps more plausible, this is what i think of when i hear this song. |

i'm sorry to ruin all of your nice "prom" scenarios, but this song makes me think of a middle aged businessman who thinks he's fallen in love with a prostitute. "I've never seen so many men ask you if you wanted to dance, they're looking for a little romance, given half a chance". whenever i hear it, my head fills with images of balding men having illicit affiars in travelodges. |

when i first heard this song i thought it was about relationships etc. after reading the suggestion that it is about Munich's past, this seems to make more sense, even if the song was not originally written about it. the line "it breaks when you don't force it" makes me think of how the Nazi party gained power in Germany legally (i.e., it wasn't forced). also, the lines "with one hand you calm me, with one hand i'm still" reminds me of news footage of Hitler giving speeches and saluting, silencing the crowd. |

i didn't understand the meaning of this song for two years. but then recently i split up with my boyfriend of a year, and two weeks later he started going out with another girl. the lie "promises worth repeating" always reminds me of how when we split up, we said we still loved each other and would be best freinds etc and that just didnt happen. and when it happened, all i could think was "how could you do this to me?". i know this isn't some counselling board, but essentially- i think the song is about someone in a relationship who is being betrayed. (as conditionoakland just said). |

i don't think that's what existentialism is trying to say. sartre was totally against apathy and the belief that "nothing really matters". the book (and the song) both relate to the existentialist idea that we have total freewill- "I can turn and walk away, or I can fire the gun". the book (but not particularly the song) also highlights the existentialist idea that we have responsibility for every action we do. |

perhaps it's about wanting to drown yourself. "always coming second best" is maybe about how you could never quite do anything right. and "ask the sea for answers" refers to how you think if you drown yourself, your questions about life will be over. "give up this fight" refers to giving up on life. |

despite the racism in the south i think its pretty unlikely that they would leave the body hanging once it was already dead. i assume the doctors are carrying out an autopsy, after having cut the body down from the tree. i think it is being sung from the point of view of a dead man. |

yes, i agree with inflamedmaggot totally. its not designed to chastise us, its morrissey asking us to remeber something that helped us grow up. i doubt that morrissey expects his fans to be fans for life because people change. the lyric

actually it reminds me of this venue in worcester, a town near where i live. there was a place called the void, which was a rock/punk etc venue for under 18s. it was magical, i've got really happy memories of being there. but then they had to change venues and the magic is gone, the people are different. and i keep clinging to the memories of the old void, but i know it won't ever be the same again. |

it is deeply sad that the song is about jesse's brother. they played this song last when i saw them, it was amazing. it was quiet and everyone was singing.
i always assumed it was about prom night or being young or whatever. but the line "and your tearin up your photos cause you wanna forget... it's over" really relates to the death of his brother. |

existentialists don't necessarily believe god is dead. sartre pretty much founded the existentialist movement and he argued that god's existence was irrelevant, so was an agonostic (or an athiest as he claims at the start of 'existentialism + humanism')
this song reminds me of the morning after a party (or in the case of this song, prom night) where some people are still asleep. and they look so innocent, like children who'd never got drunk or stoned. |

in many ways this song sickens me. morrissey makes the excessively common mistake of relating the moors murders to myra hindley alone. may i remind morrissey and everyone else the idea for the murders came from ian brady. hindley wasn't the only one to blame, in fact she played a smaller part in the murders than ian brady.
