| The Weakerthans – Relative Surplus Value Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
relative surplus value is a concept from Karl Marx's Das Kapital. Surplus value is the value produced by a worker over and above what s/he recieves in wages. Relative surplus value means the amount of surplus value relative to the value of the wage, and the main ways of increasing it for capitalists are driving down wages and increasing the intensity of labour (ie, how much stuff a worker produces per hour).
You see, being a Marxist really pays off sometimes. |

yeah, there was a big fuss about them in like '98 over here (England) but they pretty much found their natural audience (which ain't huge), and everyone else abandoned them. this is probably my favourite Gomez song...mostly they're good for more uptempo, propulsive work but turned around shows they can do the balladry stuff as well as anyone. |

| Radiohead – Motion Picture Soundtrack (Kid A version) Lyrics
| 22 years ago

|
i think the way this song is produced is very clever... thom sings about how it's never like the movies, and the music is a total pisstake of the grandiose arrangements of film music. i mean, come on! harp fills? histrionic-o-matic choirs??? one of the great strengths of kid A is how they managed to do this kind of thing (idioteque too, a sideways nod at 2 step garage) and work them into totally idiosynchratic - and amazingly strong - radiohead songs. |

i always got the impression that radiohead are far more concerned with emotional responses rather than flat semantics. i mean, what links "women and children first" and "ice age coming" and "this is really happening"? just that feeling of impending disaster. attached to it is that strange mania ("throw it in the fire!") Humans are screwing it up for themselves? who knows? this song is about terror, i don't think it gets more specific than that. |

i'm not entirely sure it's more than stream of consciousness...

everyone's in a fucking subculture. they may only loosely fit into it, but we all have labels that we're secretly proud of, get a little tingle inside when someone calls you punk or something. so with a choice between goth, punk, stoner, sakter or straight edger...well i know where my vote's going. |

| Jimmy Eat World – Goodbye Sky Harbor Lyrics

i hated jimmy eat world until i heard this.......i never realised the lyrics were as deep and complex as the music, but i always got this mental image of the gondola on final fantasy 7 just going off into nowhere when the loop starts, and then the sun rising as it travels...i used to get that kind of stuff in my head when i was a kid so it really kind of touched me. I haven't read the book, but i don't think you really have to in order to get something abstract from the lyrics, equally mournful and uplifting. |

| Built to Spill – Kicked It in the Sun Lyrics

|
the song's a general indie rant about frustrations in the beginning...i'm not sure what the fuck all that kicked it in the sun shit is about but when it speeds up, the lyrics "his master plan was so so / we're special in other ways / ways our mothers appreciate " are as impressive an ode to disappointment as radiohead have come up with. and i love radiohead too. damn i love doug. he is ace. |

Absolutely...when people say they only smoke cos their friends do and it's "sociable" (?!) i just think, is that better or worse than smoking because you, well, like smoking? this song specifically is only anti drugs, but Out Of Step covers the other areas of the movement:
(I) don't smoke
don't drink
don't fuck
at least i can fucking think

And also an utterly fantastic song that alone eclipses the rest of the album, despite the brilliance of the other "chapters". How many other bands can sound like Immortal and later Anathema in the same song without sounding ridiculous? Genius. As for the lyrics, well they're pretty literal...except for the final verse...maybe it's hinting that even in the afterlife, the consequences of his rage and actions will be visible to him... |

Nickelback are one of the most dull bands of all time, up there with Creed and all other post-grunge Nirvana-worshipping pop twats. Canada has produced so many great bands (Chupacabra, The End) but i still recommend military retaliation for the atrocity that is Nickelback. |

coming from someone who doesn't really like weezer (OK, hates 'em with a vengeance but before you all start squealing in protest, i'm entitled to my opinion) i do like this song, and the guitar solo at the end demonstrates the musicianship that the band often seem so keen to hide. |

tool fucking rule. Who else could write a song about fistfucking as a subtle metaphor for media saturation and drug abuse without sounding completely ridiculous? Maybe Tom Waits, but he doesn't generally work with such themes. |
