Yes the song is about september 11. The reason Shihad changed there name is because they did not feel comfortable haveing a name that translated to holy war especially after the events of september 11.

Shihad – Comfort Me Lyrics 21 years ago
hm maybe I was being a little to harsh. I was dissapointed that they changed their name. Their move to America seems to be for money / popularity (correct me if im wrong) which goes against some of the meanings of their songs. Does the album have the classic shihad sound that self-tilted and the general Electric have?

LOL!! do you really believe what you say bigbrother?!? I hope that you are joking. If your not your just a product of the propaganda the government pushes on to people.

Deer dance is about children innoncence against the brutality of a "plastic existence" if the child can break away from the bullshit commercialism, which destroys and dehuminises people, then there is hope for the "Deer dance" or as SOAD put it the "invitation to peace"

YOU are all prejedice!! APOMD obviously has a thing against middle eastern people and soadrulz hates americans. That kind of bullshit starts things like terrisom and war. Why dont you both try and look at the other side of the story and then you may realise that we are all people deserving justice. I want to ask you both a question, how does someones nationality determine what kind of person they are? (IT doesnt)!! Everyone needs to get over there hatred, that includes george w and middle eastern terriosts before this world can enjoy peace.
I know people from both nationalitis and they are all good people!!

Why do people think that SOAD songs are about drugs? for every SOAD song someone has caome up with an interpretation about drugs!! This song good be about drugs but SOAD are obviously a very left-wing bands. Yes left wingers have a reputation of being stoned all the time but they do talk about issues that are very important to humanity. I think if you read into the SOAD songs you may realise that a lot of them are challanging the corrupt systems that dehuminse the marginlised people in society (eg prison songm forest fuck the system...)

Anyway dont assume that a song is about drugs because it has the word "high" or "needle" in it. Sometimes the most obvious meaning is only there to hide a much deeper meaning....

This is only opinion I could be totally wrong maybe every SOAD song is about drugs, they are a bunch of stoners arnt they?

System of a Down – Deer Dance Lyrics 22 years ago
I think I have figured out sections of this song.

Basically I think the song is a contrast between the inocence of children and the corruption of youth.

"With its tired, poor, avenging disgrace,
Peaceful, loving youth against the brutality,
of plastic existence." This line speaks for itself. This is reffering to a teenagers battle against the martial easy way of living. The youths battle against the "plastic existance". In reality life is much more then the possessions the corperate rich advitse and sell. So many adults have been sucked in to the materalistic systamatic way of youth and this is what the youth have to battle against. The "plastic existence" results in corruption and war.

The children is the worlds hope for peace. They have not been corrupted yet. They are the ones who will accept the invitation to the "deer dance" and maybe the world may be able to experience peace.

"The little boy smiled it'll all be well" I think this is the line reffering to the hope for world peace. Or on a deeper level it could be reffering to pure innocence of children. Even though the world is totally fucked children are unaffected by it. Many continue to play and be happy (sadly not every child does). They have simplistic views on the world, they think that the worlds problems can be easily fixed.

The deer dance will not occur if the children continue to grow up in a world where they exposed to comercials and are forced into a life of a "plastic existance" The innocence and simplistic views of children slowly fade away as the evil corperate world and systamatic way of life takes over their minds.

Hopefully one day people will realise that they are destroying the world and change their ways so that the deer dance can occur.

I think that I may be on to something here except I havent figured some of the other lyrics yet...........

This is only my interpretation, I think SOAD songs are great for the individual to find a meaning of the song that suits themeselves

9/11 seems to be an obvious relationship to the attacks on the world trade centre.

But SOAD are a politcally left band the "9/11" in Chop Suey could be referring to the anual S11 protests that happen on that day.

System of a Down – Chop Suey! Lyrics 22 years ago
jonbean I read your response with an open mind and her is what I have to say:

I think that you shouldn't jump to conclusions some of your eveidence is weak.

firstly you can not judge a person because of their heritage. It is very racist. The fact that they are of middle eastern heritage proves nothing. People can be good and decent people no matter what race they are. I know many middle eastern people that are good people.

The fact that Toxicity was released a week before the attacks proves nothing. Possibly the reason why the alboum was number one is because system of a down play fucken good music, they are and awsome band to listen to.

Jet Pilot's lyrics are strange. It has been suggested that this song is about war. This could be a link to your terriost idea BUT system of a downs song "War" Serj seems to be rejecting war "Of war, we don't speak anymore"

As for the song Know I dont think that flying and dying is reffering to september 11. The lyrics seem to be talking about death, possibly suicide and after life. Serj is possibly sugesting that know one knows what happens to the dead . Towards the end of the song he says "Don't ever try to fly" and "Never try to die" maybe saying something like do not commit sucide for afterlife because "Books all say different things while people flap their yellow wings " but you dont KNOW if these things are true. If this is right then it could possible that system of a down dont believe in a better life after death, extremist Islamics believe this and they are the ones behind the attacks on America. This is only my interpretation...

"AMERICA! AWAKE!!!" This could mean many things you cannot assume that Serj is talking about September 11. It could mean that America need to wake up to their governments policy's on things like prisons (prison song explores this idea)

Im sure that most things would have been cancelled on September 12. It does not prove anything that the band were going to play this day. The only relation it has to September 11 is that it was the day after.

A "crossed and terrored ravage of architecture" This also could mean many things. Serj could be reffering to any kind of war Semptember 11 wasn't the first time a building was destroyed.

"Serj is giving the ol' Hitler pose " This could be suggesting that the band are too far left but it could also be harmless.

"John is dressed like a businessman (a lot of businessmen were killed in the attacks)." This proves absoulty nothing!! He could have been dressed like that for many reasons. It is a rather weak relationship to september 11.

I listened to Chop Suey and I heard the "9/11" in the background. I dont know why it was recorded. I was wondering how did you hear it? I could only hear it with my ear pressed against the speaker.

You should be careful of what you sat. Your allogations are very serious sayin things like that could eaisly ruin a persons life. I dont think you have much of a basis to prove anything although some of the things your say are interesting. SOAD are no doubt a very expressive band with obvious left winged politcal views. I do think that extremely left winged views can be dangerous (example: Nazi Germany) but I have not heard any extremeist views in SOAD's music. Being slightly left winged is a good thing. Usually these people are kind and compassionate to most human beings (especially humans that are being oppressed). I think that it is clear that SOAD are worried about important issues and what they say through their music makes a lot of sence (especially ATWA, Forrest Prison song etc).

Jonbean be careful of what you say. You really shouldn't say such things unless you have concrete evidence. Don't let yourself be influenced by populist government views. A lot of the time they are pressed on people so that they become scared and vote for the party who claims that they are going to free the world of people like terriosts.

System of a Down – Chop Suey! Lyrics 22 years ago
I havent read all the replies but those people who claim it is about Jesus and or God failing the human race im sorry to say this but I think you do not understand christianity at all. Out of the responses I read (to do with religion) only ToWn Wizzard's was reasonable.

I dont understand how people think that all the suffuring on this world is Jesus' fault. When Jesus died on the cross he offered salvation to every single human being who was willing to hear Gods words and act on them. He did not commit suicide, his death was inevitable. No one knows the events surronding Jesus' death the the Gospels were all written after 60 AD (This is when most the people who heard Jesus' teaching were dead) they are the first accounts of Jesus' life and they are not historical. So dont be to quick to believe that Jesus's last words were "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me!"

In the Gospels (espicially Luke) Jesus is protrayed as a completely non-judgemental person who deeply understands God and his own ministry. He offers salvation to anyone who repents.

From the Gosples a strong lesson of what it means and is required to be a true disciple of Jesus emerges. I think that the strongest message that emerges is to not only love the people that love you (that is easy) love those who hate you and give to anyone who needs anything, try to be a completely non-judgemental person.

As Luke says, in chapter 6 of his gospel. "Why do you see the speak in your neighbours eye, but you do not notice the log in your own eye?" In other words why do you judge and criticse the faults of other people (people here have judged Jesus) when you haven't noticed the faults about yourself and tryed to overcome them.

Jesus was completely sinless. He took on the sins of humanity and in that way he offered salvation to all.

Im in not pushing christanity on anyone. I totally respect those people who do not belive in Jesus Christ (who am I to Judge). I dont agree with people who blindly follow the religion (this includes people who go to church everyweek, people who give to charity just to feel like a good person). I dont agree with people forcing their religion on others. These two things (along with other factors) is what causes pain and suffering in our world today. People corrupt religion and then blame the state of the world on Jesus and/or God without even studying the religion to find out what it is really about.

Powderfinger – Citadel Lyrics 22 years ago
THis song is about parants (or some adult) abusing a little child.

"Parents blest shine with pride Lay child down force inside" THis suggests that the parants have been blessed with a baby. The force implies that the parents have raped or sexually molested the child. "I play on my position of trust" The parants have played on their position of trust i.e. the child has no one to trust and most likely no one to turn to. "Leave the child to self destruct" backs the idea that the child has no one to turn to. The child has been left and will most likely commit acts of self harm. "Child ashamed silent oath" THe child is ashemed of what is happening to him (even though it is not their fault) he keeps his parants abuse to himself (or herself) "Fallen heard shows no growth Shows no growth chose no growth" This child is not developing socialy or mentaly, and they chose not to. THe abuse has gone to deep for them to care

Powderfinger – Private Man Lyrics 22 years ago
This is an easy one to figure out. It is about the suicide of a famous person (I think it may be INXS singer, powderfinger did mention they wrote a song about him).

"I tell you he’s a private man In a public circumstance "
This man is hiding something maybe his depression. In public he outs on a facade, so no one knows how he is really feeling.

"He’s eyeing off an old doorframe Looking for a drastic change" I think Michael (INXS singer) hanged himself from a door knob. He is not happy with his life at the moment something has to change or he will never snap out of his depression (or what ever it was he was feeling)

"It’s such a shame this has to end But things are out of his command"
Its such a shame he feels he has no way out but to die. His life is spinning out of control.

"History secures his name" could be a reference to this person being famous.

"There’s no more problems to defend" A sign of suicide is when a person becomes really happy, he has found a way to solve his problems and he will be soon free of them forever.

"Now he falls so far" THis is the only confusing about the song because michael, I dont think, jumped of a building. Maybe powderfinger are genralising the song to the whole population this can be backed up by "When he falls so far When you fall so far
Now he falls so far When you fall so hard" I think the band maybe challanging people not to take this road. It only causes pain for other people. When you have a problem try to tackle it in a way that is healthy for yourself.

I can fully relate to this song, it is one of my all-time favourites. I tend not to listen to it these days it depresses me.

Shihad – Wait And See Lyrics 22 years ago
This song is great!!! it is about how money corrupts people. He is challanging people by suggesting money is worth nothing to your soul "the purchase of your soul, and what's money to your soul" this world is wrongly competive an material "in a competitive, material world" it is effecting the kids of the next generation "become the acne on the face of the world" What shihad want to know is "what's the true nature of man" they suggest that it is not mney, yet people are obsessesd with money and believe the more rich you are the more important you are. Shihad rightly think that money is taking control of the world "watch as money takes control"

This is a great song!! Sarcaism is one of the best forms of humor. "Yeah, I'm a freak of nature " THe sinfer is labaling himself a word used by society to label people who are different to normal. He then attacks those people by saying "If only I could be as cool as you" this is the joke. Daniel is proud to be individual and makes a mockery of those people who are sheep or as he puts it "cool"

Silverchair – Ana's Song (Open Fire) Lyrics 22 years ago
No doubt this song is related to the singers expereince of anorexia.

Things (like food) can become bad obsessions and lead to dissorders. In this case food become the centre of this persons life. They become to hate it "Please die ana" Yet love it at the same time "And you're my obsession
I love you to the bones". Eventually it wrecks your life "And ana wrecks your life Like an anorexia life". This person has become dependant on the disorder it is a deep part of him now "And I need you now somehow "

This song is interesting. I think about be the words of a person who has been abused many times. emotinaly or physicaly. Soon that person begins to resent his attacker
"Well I hate you as well". THis person has risen above his attacker and learnt that the kind of abuse should not be tolarated by anyone "No one seems to like you". The person has become sarcastic about his abuse "C'mon abuse me more I like it" maybe he likes it because it makes him a better person (sometimes people have suffured abuse become really good people)

System of a Down – ATWA Lyrics 22 years ago
brainless inturpretation makes a lot of sence. I to think this song is about the marginlized or the outsider (Charles Manson may have been useded as an example of a person on the margins of society).

"All the world I've seen before me passing by" This may refer to a person who has no control over their life like an asylum seeker or anyone in prison or anyone suffuring depression. All they see is the world passing by.
"I've got, nothing, to gain, to lose" When a person has hit rock bottom (becomes an outsider) they have nothing more to lose (i.e. freedom dignity rights as a human being etc.) yet they cannot gain anything from the so-called compassionate society as they are often treated with racist remarks or as a horrible criminal, not a human being (most people would view Charles Manson as a animal not a person).

"You don't care about how I feel" often you will find that people of the society will feel that people like Charles Manson and others who are outsiders deserve everything they get as they are the ones to blame. They often do not understand that society forces people into depression and compel them to commit the acts that they do. In other words society has failed these people.

"I don't feel it anymore" Maybe this refers to outsiders feeling so much hate and cruelty towards them that they no longer feel human i.e. they no lnoger feel anymore.

"Hey you, are me, not so pretty" I think this may be suggesting that the people who often judge outsiders are just like the outsiders but their sin is not so overt. Yet they commit a sin that mey be considered worse that is judgment and dehumanising of another person. They are not as pretty (perfect) as they think themeselves to be.

"Silent my voice, I've got no choice" I think this is reffering to the fact that the outsiders voice is never heard in piblic. As far is the corrupt goverment concerned theses people are not people desvering of an opinion they have no voice. Because of the governments power they have no choice.

"I don't feel it anymore I don't sleep, anymore, I don't eat, anymore, I don't live anymore, I don't feel." I think this may be reffering to society winning in making the outsider feel completely unhuman. They no longer do or feel the things that a person feels. This leads to depression, suicide and all kind of psychological dissorders. Only the society is to blame.

This is only my interpretation only serj and the band know what the song is really on about. It is a great song one of their best.

Moulingalette of its not about Americas flawed government or religion then how do you explain the line "You (America?) make the weapons for us all just look now!" surely it is the third world child making a statement to America that you can not fix our poverty with weapons/money because of their corrupt government. and wouldn't "No circumcisions on the chair" reffering to Judaism. I do agree with you that this song is not God talking to Jesus or anyone else.
Sage865711916 If SOAD is saying what you are suggesting they are saying then they have totally missed the point of christianity (I doubt this very much) because it is not Religion that it is corrupt it is the people who blindly follow it.

System of a Down – Prison Song Lyrics 22 years ago
maybe im rading to much in to this song but I dont think it is all about drug offenders. I think it is about the system (in particular the prison system) in general. The governments reaction to increased crime is buliding more prisons "They're trying to build a prison" and put anyone in there that they dont want to deal with (like minor drug offenders). Once they are in prison it is no longer the goverments problem. But the prison system has failed (I think this is the point SOAD are trying to make) "I buy my crack, my smack, my bitch, Right here in Hollywood" people contiune to commit crimes and the the governments answer is to build more prisons instead of dealing with and trying to help (through social work rehab etc."treatment should be increased") the people that become invloved with crime. In the other words the government dont care about people, they dont want to deal with their problems, they just want to put them in prison where they dont have to worry about them. Since America has built my prisons crime has doubled "The percentage of Americans in the prison system Prison system, has doubled since 1985". Prisons have caused my people to become trapped in a life of crime, it has wasted the lives of many people, America has failed its people once again. As SOAD would say "FUCK THE SYSTEM"

I think this song also touches on issues such as the copperate rich and war.

Arnt left winged bands the best? they play the best music!! anyway I think this song is an attack on American way of life and the American government. "Why can't you see that you are my child" I think America represents the child and the people of different race religion etc are the ones talking
"Why don't you know that you are my mind" This suggests that all people have a similar pattern of thought regardless of where they are from and what religion they practice
"Tell everyone in the world, that I'm you," I think this is to show that the divisions of race and religion in the world only cause hurt and pain... and that people are people regardless of where they are from.
"You made the weapons for us all,
Just look at us now, " I think this is suggestiong that America try to fix 3rd world problems by giving them money but currupt goverments use this to by weapons leading to more hatred and pain.
"Why can't you see that you are my child,
Why don't you know that you are my mind, " This suggests that american government is so blind to the fact that we are all people brothers and sisters. Yet wars continue relgion continues to divide thw world. In other words the world is totally fuked
