Morrissey – Irish Blood, English Heart Lyrics 19 years ago
some more about this, seeing as how it's still one of my favorite songs and I feel I can say more on the subject:

as it's written above, the first stanza is pretty self explanatory. Irish and English heritage, and I'm fortunate enough to be in a position where no governments control my fate - only myself. Unlike many countries in the world, this is something those in the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, and the US can all be thankful for - freedom.

part of what relates to the second stanza - the first chorus round of "I've been dreaming..." - is that, in some circles, the English flag (St. George's Cross, red cross on white background - part of the Union Jack) is still considered a very racist thing. Very PC parts of the UK think it is such, and get upset at it being used patriotically - especially in relation to soccer (England, Scotland and Wales all have separate international-level soccer teams). While Morrissey's obviously worried about more than footy, it's still symbolic: he hopes for a time when, much like how the stars and stripes are embraced by Americans of all background, those who have come to England from Africa, Asia or other places can embrace the Union Jack (and, through the symbol, their country).

the third stanza is, again, self explanatory - another allusion to the freedom.

the fourth is where it gets interesting. To Americans, this would be akin to saying "Screw the Puritans, the Republicans, the Democrats - all of them. Lets get a government truly by and for the people without the politics." Oliver Cromwell is (in my opinion) a detestable figure of English history (think a Puritan who led a very violent and bloody revolution that ended in a military dictatorship until he died), and being "spat upon" and turning the backs toward the Royal Family (who are, for what it's worth, imports from Germany....) are signs that the English people are trying to move past the history and towards a more democratic society. Perhaps even a bit more Marxist.

I'm American, my family lines have been here a while, but they are mostly Irish and English, and I embrace the culture (especially the soccer :D) and love not only the sound of the song, but the cultural meaning it has. Irish Blood, English Heart indeed.

Nine Inch Nails – The Hand That Feeds Lyrics 19 years ago
check out the official nine inch nails web page under the Current section, the picture from 3/17 links to a "the hand that feeds" video.

sounds alt rock...but at the same time keeps the nine inch nails edge. the energy sounds right to me. not as electronic as past stuff, but then, there have been songs (starfuckers, wish, etc.) that do not sound electric and sound more like metal and rock. the intensity is there, and that's key.

as to the lyrics...sounds like a questioning of someone who's in a position where they finally wake up from ignorance. the song is questioning what they're going to do - bite the hand that feeds because it's evil (corporations/religion/government/whatever) or do you continue living your life?

wow. with my racial background, and my knowledge of history, and my pride for my historical homelands (ireland and england included prominently)...I can give this a major thumbs-up, and smile every time I hear the song.

AFI – Silver And Cold Lyrics 20 years ago
I've been loving this song since I heard it on "sing the sorrow" and really love it as a single (hear it a lot, you see)...and *now* I understand what he's saying! I should be better (listening to Thom Yorke is about as hard as it gets...davey gives him a run)...

sounds like it has a lot of the same themes as nine inch nails' "fragile". which I like a lot. great song.

Nada Surf – Inside Of Love Lyrics 21 years ago
I think about myself a lot when I hear this song...

I'm loved, I have a good deal of love from my friends and family...

but I've never been in a one-on-one relationship - not even a petty middle school one.

and I think that same sort of thing is what the persona is saying in this song too - always on the outside, never on the inside.

or...it could be seen as frustration ("of course I'll be alright/I just had a bad night") with relationships (or the lack thereof), which I feel a lot too...

I love this song.

papaear: interesting thought...but knowing trent, I'd say he knew that but put it in the context of something more along the lines of love or relational symbology.

very cool, though, didn't know that.

a very, very good nin song. surprisingly (unlike a few other pretty hate machine songs) it stands the test of time, especially when faced to fragile songs...

Nine Inch Nails – Into the Void Lyrics 21 years ago
what i think is...in the "timeline," of the story, this is after the death that I think comes at the end of disc 1 in "the great below"...

so this could maybe be a place in the afterlife - maybe limbo, or waiting to see where he'll go. if anyone else has read dante's "inferno", the parallels are very strong - the part about "all lined up all the ones that aren't allowed to stay", about the sun not shining (it doesn't in dante's hell), and about not knowing where you'll fall in that scheme of things.

The Living End – Silent Victory Lyrics 21 years ago
definitely a "relationship gone wrong" song, the two verses ("somewhere beneath..." and "struggling hard...") seem to be from the woman and the man's points of view...but the pre-chorus is confusing. I'd love to see someone else's view on it, migh clarify my view.

The Living End – Blood On Your Hands Lyrics 21 years ago
amazing song. another great song, sort of like "prisoner of society" in staking the youth's claim in the world.

not just the lyrics, but damn can TLE produce some great sounds or what?!

The Living End – Dirty Man Lyrics 21 years ago
for the meaning...I've heard a few comments about how appropriate it was to release the song as a single in Oz when there were major public elections going on...very good lyrics, they dig into your mind and won't escape..

but I don't like to dig too much for meaning in TLE songs, so I'll say this: musically and lyrically, best song on "roll on" by far.

Led Zeppelin – Over the Hills and Far Away Lyrics 21 years ago
for what it's worth, in the version on "how the west was won" he says "pocket full of gold/acupulco gold/acupulco gold"

I think (in keeping with the tolkien conspiracy theorists here) it's aragorn for sure...and arwen would, as has been stated, be a natural extension...
