Catatonia – Goldfish And Paracetamol Lyrics 19 years ago
That's a really good interpretation, Welsh-bard, I agree with the meaning you promulgate...

There's a number of references to domesticity that she throws in that build on the idea. The only needle that doesn't leave her 'blind' is a hypodermic one... and I thought 'It's tourniquet by crochet' expressed the feeling of being strangled (or at least constricted, as if by tourniquet) by mundane household chores (crochetting) and the life that accompanies them..

Bob Dylan – Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 Lyrics 21 years ago
Hey, everyone:

I think that to say that this song is just about drugs is missing the point. For me, Dylan is using the biblical imagery of being stoned-- as in, having stones thrown at one-- to convey the sort of social preoccupations that he had, visible in many other songs of the time. Society will knock you down whether you try to be creative ('they'll stone you when you're playing your guitar'); for just being yourself, you'll be picked upon somehow ('they'll stone you when you're walking 'long the street') or when you're trying to survive 'mak[ing] a buck.') And the pathos is to say 'good luck' to those less fortunate; to muster up some lackadaisical half-empathy. The ironic thing that makes the song is the upbeat backing music that somewhat disguises the song's ambiguities.

Ryan Adams – Dear Chicago Lyrics 21 years ago
Ah damn, I'm surpised that no one has written about this song yet. Well, it is hard to write about it, to be honest... its music is just sweeping and ambient... I imagine a busker with their face blued out by the cutlassing night when I hear it...

Ryan Adams – Sylvia Plath Lyrics 21 years ago
I love Ryan Adams almost as much as I love Sylvia Plath. Indeed, he was inspired very much by her writing and he carried around her magnificent Journals with him on the road. He wants an inspiration, but not the usual complacent muse...

As for Plath's writing, check out Winter Trees and all the Crossing the water poems, her best. 'Event' is a great summary of her life and descent.

Yellowcard – Rough Draft Lyrics 21 years ago
Also, I find the lyrics second rate.... you are leaving me in lieu of this song makes little sense at all; it's implying that she's meant to leave the song rather than him. Most of the lyrics anyone could have come up with; the rest is trying to be serious and failing. I bet they wrote the whole chorus just around including the word 'lieu.' (Which should be pronounced LYU, not LU. Fair enough if you don't pronounce English Us, but mispronouncing French is just evil ;D.)

Yellowcard – Rough Draft Lyrics 21 years ago
I can appreciate innovation, but I can see little of it in Yellowcard's oeuvre. The way that the singer pronounces every vowel nasally really bugs me.

Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show – Sylvia's Mother Lyrics 21 years ago
I wonder why Sylvia was leaving town; was she disgraced by the singer, do you think?

Green Day – Boulevard of Broken Dreams Lyrics 21 years ago
I don't particularly like this song; its melody's nice enough, but the average angstisch thirteen year old could have written the lyrics, which really disappoints when one compares it to the crackingly good tracks on the rest of American Idiot. I really dislike lyrics with one motif and no substance... so when listening to the song, I try to block out the words.

Eminem – Big Weenie Lyrics 21 years ago
this song is puerile, but this page is so amusing... simpg/SNMN, you are a comic genius; although I'd watch out for schizophrenia, were I you.

Eminem – Just Lose It Lyrics 21 years ago
Although I agree that this is in the (now mouldy) mould of Eminem's MTV-attention-winning singles, it seems to me to that this is Eminem's attempt to poke fun at the music industry at a whole-- specifically towards the new conception of what rap is. Quite a lot of people expect rap to be staid over here, and so Eminem recycles these shitty songs clichés about dancing with the ladies (stanza 2) and the rapper's machissimo (stanza 3.) To me, it's more than a bunch of random crap.

Nonetheless, when I hear it on the radio, I always think: 'what sort of drug would make anyone think that this evil song is a good way to introduce an album?'

Green Day – American Idiot Lyrics 21 years ago
Wonderful song, but the level of political ignorance displayed by many of the Pro-Bushers here is frightening, absolutely fucking frightening... Sadaam was nothing like a Communist as Ricks said. I'm not surprised to see Green Day's former fans bitching about a song that they think 'accuses' them... hell, he's not saying all Americans are idiots; he's saying that those who believe the propaganda fed to you by the troughful are. You can't judge a war right just by a few lines of description about the country on which war is fought and shoddy allegations. Will most of America never see that it was /Saudis/ who attacked the US in 9/11; /Saudis/ who want to bomb it again? Probably not, because your news media can't say anything about the country that owns 10% of the US' wealth.

Green Day – Jesus of Suburbia Lyrics 21 years ago
Although I prefer the Dookie songs to some their latest stuff, one has to applaud their growth; especially when it surfaces on songs like this one, 'American Idiot,' and 'Wake me up when September ends.' Anyway; every band is influenced somehow; there's no such thing as not being influenced even if bands sound original... originality is turning your influences into something fresh, not not being influenced at all. And I think it shows that their influences (and, in turn, their writing,) have grown larger and have sophisticated.

Snow Patrol – How to Be Dead Lyrics 21 years ago
I agree that it's about a couple's argument, stanze one and three being the guy and stanza 2 being the girl, like O Doctor suggested... As for its being about talking to one's parents; why on darkened earth would people be talking to their parents with words like 'baby??'

A little thing about the accent: in some parts of Scotland, whence Snow Patrol come, 'ee' is pronounced shortly, like 'ih.' ... He's saying 'if the ectasy's in, the /weed/ is definitely out.' ... So, no direct statement about drugs there, although the whole story of the song is telling.

Camera Obscura – Eighties Fan Lyrics 21 years ago
Ah, Cámera Obscura rock... yes, they're from Glasgow, where I too spent most of my life (and saw them often... ironically, though, I mostly saw them down in London.) I love this track; although my favourite has to be 'Before you cry,' whose lyrics are unfortunately not up here; you should try to find the track-- from Underacheivers Please Try Harder-- and fall in love witht. Anyway, a few points:

. yeah, Misfit Creep and Kay-arla are absolutely right... although I find the idea of Calico words in Eighties really evocative.

. she's saying 'your love will be the death of you,' not life. For people not used to Tracyanne's accent, love & life can seem interchangeable, but there is a definite difference...

Beck – Steal My Body Home Lyrics 21 years ago
'Ring the moon like a broken bell' is one of my favourite Beck lines. Steal My Body Home is a song that lends itself to lyrical creativity... Beck has mentioned, when talking about 'Lazy Flies,' that many of his songs are like motion pictures. 'Steal my body home' is the sort of abstract arthouse film that they screen at 3 am... the nocturnal nature of it benefits its style and direction

Beck – Feather In Your Cap Lyrics 21 years ago
A great piece of melancholy, unfortunately neglected in Beck's extensive oevre. The Suburbia version is divine, and far more developed; its lyrics are as follows:

Make a move with what you can
Dead waters rise higher than your mind
Disappointment is a feather in your cap
You want the truth so you can crush it in your hand

There's no map that can tell you where you are
You're in between things that only go half way
Your tangled brain, your tired old refrain
You'll be singing it in your tired old asylum

You want the best, you want contests
My eyes are filled with prizes you've been showing
Your disappointment is a card up your sleeve
Place your bets at the door before you leave

Beck – Alcohol Lyrics 21 years ago
a lovely soothing song; Beck matches alcohol with his own sedateness... I think that the noise at the end downs the song, somewhat, but I love it nonetheless.

Beck – Truckdrivin' Neighbors Downstairs (Yellow Sweat) Lyrics 21 years ago
I agree, Subterranean... this is a wonderful song, and, like much of Beck's writing, based on true life. The bit at the start is an actual recording of the lowlifes next to whom he was living...

Beck – Asshole Lyrics 21 years ago
You should try to catch his performance of this at the Tibetan Freedom concert; it's an exceptionally good one.

I like the way that Beck makes an alteration on an all-too-large theme; a lesser writer would put the onus on the girl, but this is about his feeling an asshole, not considering her one. It lets us to make the judgment...

Hanson – MMMBop Lyrics 22 years ago
As for the boy/girl debate, when we were younger, there used to be a thing going round that they were hermaphrodites: that's cruel but that's life..

Wow! Their lyrics! You are completely right, they're the next Sylvia Plaths! (No offense, Plath)I mean, who can dispute the fantastic poetry of the following song:
Well out of all the reindeers you know
You're the mastermind
I said run, run, Rudolph, men will think you're far behind (you know it)
I said run, run Rudolph, Santa's gotta make it to town
I said Santa make him hurry
Tell him he can take the freeway down
Run, run Rudolph
Cause I'm whizzin' like a merry go round

Said Santa to a boy child, 'What have you been longing for
Said all I want for Christmas is a rock 'n' roll electric guitar
Then away went Rudolph whizzin' like a shootin' star, yeah
I'm BLOWN AWAY! Woo-hoo, I'll have to buy the album! Don't you think this could be the next Star Spangled Banner?
Also, the following must be the best, most meaningful lyrics EVER MADE!!!
Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du
Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, Ba du dop
Ba du bop, Ba du dop
Ba du
Plant a seed, plant a flower, plant a rose
You can plant any one of those
Keep planting to find out which one grows
It's a secret no one knows
It's a secret no one knows

In an mmmbop they're gone.
In an mmmbop they're gone. In an mmmbop they're not there.
In an mmmbop they're gone. In an mmmbop they're not there.
In an mmmbop they're gone. In an mmmbop they're not there.
In an mmmbop they're gone. In an mmmbop they're not there.
Until you lose your hair. But you don't care.

WOW! Take the Booker prize of Okri and give it to them!! YAY!

Better songs could be cut out of my pancreas.

Counting Crows – Colorblind Lyrics 22 years ago
Thinking about this, it's obvious to see the sex side of it- the repetition of 'I am fine' looking at losing your virginity because, you know, the pain of losing hymen etc. I don't think it's about racial relations, but I believe people should be entitled to hold their own opinions about everything- after all, that's what makes the world contrasting...

Ah, I love this song- it's my second favourite aside from Don't Need the Sunshine... God, I got tickets to see them at the Birmingham Academy, and it was just my luck that she had a breakdown then and missed it... and I never got my money back. Still, fantastic band, I wish they were still together.
