Here is another possibility...... this song could be losing your faith and falling into any unfavorable behavior pattern.....i.e. "I used to be so big and strong....I used to know my right from wrong....Iused to never be afraid.... I used to be somebody.... I used to have something inside.... Now it's just this hole that's open wide....I used to want it all". Many songs by NIN address faith type issues, and even the name of the band is a religious reference, it referrs to the spikes used to nail Christ to the cross.

heard this song shortly after its release and I always thought it was about tele-evangelism and his disdain for the hypocritical nature of that business(because that is what it is). Also thought the song addressed the hidden motives of tele-eveangelists i.e. second verse.... god money's not looking for the cure ect. Just something to think about.
