Sex Pistols – Anarchy in the U.K. Lyrics 22 years ago
It's a cool song...not very hard to understand, b ut what does 'no dogs body' mean?

Also, everybody that likes this song, check out the Clash's version of it, Anarchy in the UK, sung in Spanish...cooler intro but not as good of a solo. The Clash are still indisputably a better band though. Although I'll get shot for saying that. Or chain whipped.

Propagandhi – Ska Sucks Lyrics 22 years ago
First I'll address those hidden tracks. They're each about 3 or 4 seconds of the whole band saying 'fuck!' over and over again (at the end of the last song , number 12, someone belches and they all start saying fuck. For 5 more tracks). They have no names though.

Anyway...check their site out. They tell you that this song is a joke, just t opiss off all the neo nazis that were listening to ska back then blah blah blah. It's still a funny song.

Propagandhi – Purina Hall Of Fame Lyrics 22 years ago
Musically it's Propagandhi's best song and one of the better ones I've heard ever (and I listen to lots of Zep, and Cream and Hendrix too) with its blasting, haunting riffs and that heartbeat part. Whew!
Lyrically, though, it doesn't let you down either. It's about animal rights, the way we treat them like...for lack of a better word, like animals. We keep them confined in our houses as pets and in slaughterhouses to be killed. When they happen to do something that saves our lives then they get commemorated with some petty honour (the origin of the title). It's also about violent 'animal liberationists'...('a package under a terminal bench and a short fuse to scatter) why Propagandhi chose to sing about bombing things mystifies me. I guess they think some causes are worth bombing for?
Either way it's a great song. Dig it! Just hope you aren't as disturbed by te intro as some people are.

Propagandhi – Haillie Sellasse, Up Your Ass Lyrics 22 years ago
As a Bob Marley fan this song kind of gets on my nerves...plus it's not very great sounding reggae. Haillie Sellaisse (AKA Ras Tafari) was an Ethiopian emperor that a lot of people for whatever reason belived was Jesus. THey named a religion after him, got awesome hairstyles, cool music, and a lot of kaya...

I dunno why Propagandhi felt a need to bust on them. Maybe for a break from every other band's attacks on the major religions.

Rage Against the Machine – Wake Up Lyrics 22 years ago
YEah, with a Kashmir-esque intro and a song about Malcolm X, what else do you want?

Maybe those cool middle eastern sounding riffs from Kashmir...

Anyway...it's partly just about how the government and media manipulate information but also about the civil rights movement, with Martin Luther King and Malcolm X who were killed for their views, quite possibly by the government. I don't know but I been told, that the part Zack is reading from near the end is from some COINTELPRO documents on Malcolm X. I dunno. Either way, the song emphasizes mostly Malcom.

Rage Against the Machine – Maggie's Farm (Bob Dylan cover) Lyrics 22 years ago
Originally written by Bob Dylan in the 60's or early 70's...of course he was the greatest songwriter of the 20th century, but RATM doesn't do a bad job on this one either.

System of a Down – Science (feat. Arto Tunçboyacıyan) Lyrics 22 years ago
And also...it really amuses me to see atheists all yelling at Christians (and Christians specifically--Muslims and Jews may exhibit the same traits but railing at THEM is racist apparently) about how they're all jumping on the bandwagon of hating everyone, and they're all trying to conform...and how they're weak for having to rely on faith. Of course the accusers here are just the same, only it's a different bandwagon and a different form of faith...faith that no supreme being(s) exists(s) and the bandwagon of saying you don't beieve in one.

Sure there are atheists whose views are sincere, but would they admit there are religious people whose views are sincere? Not for the most part.

System of a Down – Science (feat. Arto Tunçboyacıyan) Lyrics 22 years ago
This song is more straighforward than their other songs, thankfully. ANd understandable.

What they're saying is that while science can do wonders for our society, at the same time it has begun to take over our culture and distract us from our own humanity. Science isn't bad by definition, but it has let us down, in some ways at least.

The other message is that, as they say, faith is the single most potent element of human existence. Everyone has faith in something, or someone, whether or not you have it in the form of religion or superstition, or in this case, science. But since our culture is beginning to trust that science can do everything, can make the world perfect and can kill God...it's failing us. We have faith in our machines and technology rather than a belief in something more meaningful.

Also, 'science has failed our mother earth'. Science has its good points and its bad points. OF course science has cured diseases and prolonged our lives, but it also created the atomic bomb, chemical warfare, guns, bombs, and pollution. Science has to recognize its limits--thats what the song is about.

System of a Down – Chop Suey! Lyrics 22 years ago
The title of the song, I think refers to being false--thus 'makeup' which covers things up, and the rest of the first verse...

Fast forward. When Jesus was dying on the cross, among other things he said 'Father, why have you forsaken me?' and 'Father into your hands I commend my spirit.'

This along with the angel references make me believe it's about religion...I'm pretty sure SOAD aren't Christian, but still. But like most of their songs it's open to interpretation.

System of a Down – Aerials Lyrics 22 years ago
This is lyrically one of the best, if not the best, songs of the new decade...Bob Dylan would be proud of it. It certainly shares some traits of a lot of his songs. The main one is that it's vague, mystical and open to interpretation, and full of strange imagery.

I personally think the song is more spiritual than anything, but ties social commentary along with it. Another reason to call this band 'the Bob Dylan of heavy metal'.

Anyhow, it seems to me that the gist of the song is that before and after our mortal existence we are all together, united in some other world, but in this world we put up the walls that keep us from each other and from thinking and being what we really want. However, there are lots of great interpretations up above this one and I have no doubt they're all right.

Also similar to Dylan is the imagery: instead of visions of Johanna and dog soldiers and everything, we have waterfalls and aerials. Aerials could mean anything although I tend to assume the meaning as antennae up in the air, like the cell phone tower things you always see...but that's me.

Great song, great band. I sincerely hope they keep up their popularity, as they're pretty much the only popular band out there that's really out for social change and progress.

Bob Dylan – Series of Dreams Lyrics 22 years ago
It's a great song musically, one of his best I'd say. But as to waht it's about...maybe just being preoccupied with dreams or nightmares, or just thinking about all the trials and tribulations of life. With Zimmy, who can tell?

Bob Dylan – Knockin' on Heaven's Door Lyrics 22 years ago
Every band has covered this song, so the meaning has really gotten lost. But since it's in a cowboy movie it's probably just the feelings of the sherriff or the outlaw getting tired of all the killing.

Led Zeppelin – No Quarter Lyrics 22 years ago
It seems more like the same idea as The Immigrant Song. The band is shown as a horde of Vikings (thus the references to Thor, and Valhalla in Immigrant Song) conquering unexplored lands.

Led Zeppelin – Immigrant Song Lyrics 22 years ago
I think it's just a comparison of a rock band to viking warriors, conquering new lands. Since Zeppelin was 'invading' various parts of the world. It's certainly about Vikings--midnight sun would refer to the fact that in the far northern countries, there is often more than 24 hour daylight. Valhalla is of course where all the good viking warriors

Led Zeppelin – Achilles Last Stand Lyrics 22 years ago
I can't tell if this is supposed to be a reference to Greek mythology or another analogy of the band as warriors, like Immigrant Song. There is more than one reference to Greek myth (Achilles, Atlas, the beginning lyrics that somewhat correspond to events in the Iliad, and the 'wondering and wandering' part that could be about the Odyssey) but maybe it just got its title from RObert's foot.
